To Feel Good Again

Saturday we traveled along what I am sure is the longest road in America (I-26, its the worst) to Spartanburg for my friend Steph and her new husband Patrick to be married.  There were quite a few people from my class there and we had a great time with the little mini reunion.  The wedding was beautiful as was Steph; just stunning.  The wedding was Kentucky Derby themed (him being from Kentucky) and we all got derby glasses from different years as our favors, so cool and unique!  We had such a fabulous time dancing the night away and Steph and Patrick closed out the night with a swing dance to Footloose (don’t worry, she had a different dress on)!

They rode off on a tandem bicycle with cans dragging of course.  It was so them.  Steph is a friend that I run with often, though not lately due to proximity.  I am sure now that we are both back in Charleston again, we will tackle many more roads together; her a new MRS!!

Sunday was pretty much a lost day.  After getting back, we were so worn out we pretty much just lazed around trying to recover.

Today was the re-kick off of my 6 week goals: 180 miles, 180 minutes of stretching and 1800 push ups.  It is also the kick off of Runner’s World Run Streak to run at least one mile every day until July 4th.  Game on!

Thank goodness I finally had my first run that I actually felt good on in weeks today.  I learned in the past week that just because you aren’t unable to peel yourself off the couch doesn’t mean you aren’t sick.  Recovering from illness might as well be recovering from a marathon.  Really, your body and immune system are working over time to get you better, just like it does in a race.  Fingers crossed I will continue to be in the clear tomorrow (I still have a lingering cough and sniffles, but I am on the up and up)!

Hope you had a fantastic Memorial Day Weekend!  Any one else doing the Runner’s World Run Streak?!

Lindsey and Clay’s Wedding!

The morning started bright and early for me.  I got up at 6:45 and went for a run before the day got started.  I ran out to the church which seemed appropriate and back.  Hartsville was so charming, I really loved running there.

When I got home, I busted butt getting ready to head to the bridal breakfast.  The food was great (I even had the grits!) and everyone really enjoyed themselves before starting the getting ready craziness.  We all got up and said a few words about how we know Lindsey and what not.  Once again, there were more than a few tears.  Those women had the key to my water works for sure!

After breakfast it was game time.  I went for the first hair appointment at 11 while the other girls headed to make final adjustments at the reception venue.  I pretty much hung out there all day (until about 3:30) when we were all finally finished getting pretty!

We had just enough time to dart into her aunt’s house and grab a quick pulled pork sandwich before heading over to the church to start getting ready!!

We took a few fun pictures before the ceremony with just the bride and her bridesmaids and then it was show time!

The ceremony was perfect: heartfelt, emotional, beautiful and the perfect length.  It wasn’t a race through it but it wasn’t too long either!  I felt so honored and amazed to be standing with them on this most special day.  I am so glad she asked me to be a part of it because seeing the love they have just really makes me believe it can really work!

After the ceremony we took the million combinations of pictures, including the jumping picture which is much more challenging in real life than everyone makes it look.  I may have gotten the jump right but I am fairly certain my face can’t be good, AT ALL!

Post pictures it was party time!  We headed over to the venue, had some great food, drinks and dance our little tails off.

Lindsey and Clay’s wedding was truly amazing.  Lindsey, if/when you read this, know that you made the most beautiful bride (I am sure you have already been told this a million times).  But also know that you make the most beautiful friend and I am so lucky to have you in my life, not just on your wedding day but in each day of my life!!

Sorry to every one else, that got sappy at the end, but I kinda like her a lot!

Hope you all had a great Monday.  P.S. the first day of my big exams went great, hopefully tomorrow will go just as well!!

Wedding Weekend: Rehearsal Dinner

We are finally home and I am exhausted but I thought I would hit at least part of the amazing weekend we had!!

Friday after checking into our hotel and getting ready we headed to the church for the actual rehearsal.  Lindsey was already glowing and was just so happy about everything.  She has honestly been the most perfect bride.  So sweet and kind, and just herself the whole time!

DSC_0022

After taking down notes and learning our cues and shedding a few tears (yes I know it was just the rehearsal), we left the church and headed for the dinner portion of the evening.  The food was fantastic and it was so nice to chat and swap stories with all of her and Clay’s friends and family that we hadn’t had the privilege of meeting yet.

After many people had left, I was finally able to give her the gift that I had greatly anticipated for months.  I made a photo book of all of the events leading up to the wedding (showers, bachlorette, dress fittings, etc) and had all of the bridesmaids and her momma write a letter to her and interspersed throughout.  I was so excited about it and I think she really enjoyed it (and hopefully only cried a little).

I will be sure to recap the actual wedding tomorrow but for now I am going to relax and try to keep calm before I have to take the biggest practical exam of my entire life!!  Praying for calm nerves in the morning!

Bachlorette Day Two

Day two held all the really fun activities!!

We went to a place called J. Christophers.  I had this thing called a skillet with potatoes, onions, jack cheese, avocado, eggs and smoked turkey.  It was arguably the best breakfast I have ever had!

I highly recommend this place for brunch if you are ever in Savannah.  It was in an old auto garage and they had mismatched mugs which I loved.

After breakfast we headed home and got ready to hit the beach at Tybee Island.  We only stayed about two hours but it was really nice and relaxing.

When we came home, we all took turns showering and spent some time getting dolled up before heading out downtown.  All the restaurants were crazy packed so we ended up going to a burger joint, which is really Lindsey’s favorite anyway so all for the best!

After dinner, we headed to Club One.  It is a huge gay bar and there was an absolutely amazing drag show.  We had planned to start there and then head a few other places.  We stayed there from about 10:30 until 3 when the bar closed!  We had such an incredible time.

Sunday morning wake up came really quickly.  We had a quick bite at the same restaurant we ate at after the Savannah Marathon and then headed back to Charleston.  I am still catching up on sleep but what an incredible weekend.  I think (at least I hope) Lindsey had the time of her life!!

Pure Bliss

Yesterday was purely awesome.  It was such a relief to be done with a test that has been stressing me out off and on for about two years!!  And amazingly I improved my score pretty significantly from when we took the practice exam in May which was awesome.

The rest of the day was pretty good, other than having a three hour class after (I was barely there mentally for sure).  I was able to make up my 12 mile LSD run from Sunday that disintegrated and it went beautifully (as it should have).  The weather was perfect and I got to run to a friends house and end there so I didn’t have to do an out and back which is nice whenever I can work that out.

Once I got there and showered, it was DRAFT TIME.  I had a draft last night and another one tonight and I am pretty excited about both of my teams (though sad I don’t have 1 single Eagle, womp womp!

To top off the past few days being awesome, I got to go to Lindsey’s FINAL FITTING for her wedding dress.  Unfortunately pictures can’t be shared for obvious reasons but she looked stunning and I can’t wait for her big day (as if I already wasn’t excited)!

I am sure I will come down from cloud nine soon, but for now I am just gonna hang out up here and enjoy the view.

Anyone else playing fantasy this year?

Swap It Out Sunday and An Awesome Weekend

For this week’s swap, it is less of a swap than an add.  They are a staple for us.

Chia Seeds! Photo: seedguides.info

Of course my beloved Overnight Oats require these little guys but you can really just them for so much.  You can just add them to smoothies, yogurt and granola, cereal or really anything you can think of.  With about 25 calories in 1/2 a tablespoon, it is worth adding for all the amazing benefits.  They are high in fiber, great for digestion, there is preliminary research that it helps to lower cholesterol.  I am a huge advocate for these guys for sure!!

Saturday

Saturday I fit in a quick run, went to a class BBQ at one of my professor’s houses then headed up to the wedding shower.  I had set my alarm early to get my long run in but it was thunder storming so I just did some shifting around of runs and put something shorter in once the thunder and lightning stopped.

The BBQ was so fun and I took Scarlett who had the greatest time playing with her friend Leo and some new pups she hadn’t met before.  She was such a muddy disaster by the time we left!

As soon as I got home, I did a quick change and we hit the road to head to the shower. I am so excited to finally get to share our gift here.  I couldn’t before because I couldn’t risk the bride catching a glimpse of it!

I took the pictures around downtown Charleston and Casey built the frame out of some  of the reclaimed wood he has been stocking up!

We had such a great time just munching and chatting.  I didn’t do any drinking because I was the chauffer but everyone else enjoyed some nice beverages.

By the time we got home I was ready to crash…I think I was asleep before my head even grazed the pillow!

Sunday

We had a fairly lazy morning.  I got some studying done, read a little of my book, had a cup of coffee and then we headed to get some brunch at The Lot.  The food was fantastic and I did a good job making healthy choices (well I thought anyway)!  I got an omelet with squash, spinach and cheddar cheese topped with Kale with oranges on the side.  Sounds pretty good right…and it tasted amazing!

I thought that little coffee cup was the cutest!

I thought that little coffee cup was the cutest!

However, when I came home I left to run (about 2 hours after eating) and had hands down, no questions asked the worst run I have ever done in my life!  I threw up three times, at one point my vision was going blurry and I cut it short by about 5 miles.  I literally did not have a choice.  Even now about 4 hours after getting home my stomach still feels super acidic and I am shaky.  WOMP WOMP!!  The weather was amazing, I hadn’t had a sip of alcohol since my glass of wine after my 20 miler last weekend so I have no idea what happened, but it was no bueno!

I have decided to just make it up tomorrow.  I had moved Monday’s tempo run to yesterday, so I will just call todays run my “4 miles easy” and do my 12 miles LSD tomorrow, hopefully with a more fortunate result.

For now I am putting the run behind me, casually reviewing my notes and trying to relax because tomorrow is the big day.  9 am tomorrow I will be taking my 150 question comprehensive (over two and a half years) exam, no big deal right?  So if you think of it send me some love at about that time, I will GREATLY appreciate it!  One step closer to the end!

Trip Home in Pictures

So first off, I am sorry for being the worst blogger ever.  Those few days at home were an absolute whirlwind.

Many of my food endeavors will be captured in my WIAW this week so I will skip the redundancy there.

Post 20 mile run, we went to Surf Bagel for breakfast (my absolute favorite) and then I took Casey around downtown Rehoboth, went shopping, had a beer at a local bar/restaurant (Arena’s).  We headed home mid afternoon and went to pick crabs!

2013-07-18 20.07.33

I have missed this so much.  I love a good southern oyster roast, but nothing beats picking crabs.  This was Casey’s first crab picking adventure and of course my mom and I competed to teach him the ‘best technique’.  What ended up happening though was that my dad was the best and he learned by watching him rather than listening to either of us blabber on.  (Mine is clearly the best, it was just too sophisticated for a beginner!)  Just kidding!

First thing Friday, I took Casey to the cafe (Cafe Azafran) in downtown Lewes where I worked for part of high school.  I got my absolute favorite, baked oatmeal with steamed skim milk and Black Magic coffee.  It was so hot and I was sweating bullets the whole time but it was perfect.

The afternoon held a trip to the beach with my friend Megan where Casey and I realized we have become southern babies about the cold northern water, CHILLY!  After walking the beach and seeing all my old friends from the beach patrol (man I miss those days), we went home for a barbecue my mom put together so we could see all the family.  I swear she made enough food for 50 people, there were about 15!

After stuffing my face for a few hours, a few friends of ours that used to live in Charleston but now live in Maryland made the trip over and we met a friend of mine from college out in Rehoboth.  We started off at the token Rehoboth bar, the Purple Parrot.  I think the boys were a bit flustered but we had a great time.  Then we took the Jolly trolley over to Dewey and went to the Starboard for a few Orange Crushes (my summer favorite).  I was able to see so many people I knew, I honestly felt like a minor celebrity.

Saturday morning brought an early morning run, a hair cut and a last breakfast with my mom where my little brother has his first job!!  I can’t believe he is old enough!!!!  Then we hit the road to head north for the wedding.

The wedding was incredible.  The venue was awesome, it was an old theater.  We came into a receiving area, then went up to a room for the ceremony, then went to the balcony area for a cocktail hour where you could over look where the reception was going to be and then we headed down to the main theater area for dinner and dancing and surprise band LAURA LEA!!  This is a band we used to go see every Wednesday at the Starboard for as long as I can remember so getting to see them and being with all the people that mean the most to me made the trip 100% worth it; absolute cherry on top of a truly unbelievable trip.

Sunday morning was back to reality and the dreaded trip back.  It didn’t go very smoothly but I luckily felt pretty great considering the circumstances.

If you made it through this whole thing, my mind is blown!!  Today’s return to reality (and speed work) was not welcomed, hopefully tomorrow with set me back in a better routine!

What is your favorite part of going home?  Do you get to visit home often (if you do, I am sooooo jealous!)?

Bad Running JuJu

This morning I had an easy 5 miler to get in which is usually no sweat but I was really concerned what this blister was going to do.  With a ten miler tomorrow and a 20 the next day, I was thinking today was make or break.  So I wrapped my foot up and set off.

2013-07-16 07.30.56

The wrap worked perfectly.  It was a little bit sensitive walking around the house but felt great on the run, can’t ask for better than that.

So things were going great and at about mile 2 I noticed my arm band felt kind of funny so I looked at it and one of the straps was looking pretty loose.  At 2.5 KABLAM, the darn thing fell right off my arm and practically disintegrated!

2013-07-16 14.29.37

That end on the left that is kinda yellowish are the remnants of the glue that was supposed to be holding it to the other side of the strap.  This is especially unfortunate since I have a 2o miler coming up.  I will probably use my waist band strap thing until I can get in touch with LifeProof about the arm band warranty.  I have only had this band since September so not exactly “life proof” only lasting 10 months.

I tried to call them today and sat on hold for 20 minutes before giving up and then send an e-mail warranty inquiry.  Hopefully they will respond favorably because this thing was not cheap (like $50) to fall apart like that.  I will let you all know how it ends up!

In other news, I have been so busy lately I haven’t even mentioned I am going home tomorrow for a wedding this weekend.  I am so excited.  I get to see my family, I can do my 20 mile run on my old trails and roads and relive my good old days and eat great northern food and see old friends.  The wedding at the end will be the grand finale!  I am beyond excited.

Just have to get through: clinic tonight, pack, 10 mile run in the am, 2 classes a board meeting then ON THE ROAD!!
