The past 24 hours has been quite a series of unfortunate events starting with the crapping out of my hair dryer.
My grand mother gave me this thing when I was in like 7th grade so it has been a miracle to last this long but I was so bummed. Plus (and I am not one to complain about my hair because I honestly believe it is god’s gift to be) but once I decide what I am doing with my hair I have to commit. So after getting out of the shower for a bit I let it dry some and brushed it out. Once it is brushed out, letting it dry in it’s natural curl is a hot mess so today I got to have hot mess hair!
Then after leaving with plenty of time to get to work I got half way there and realized I forget my id. So I had to turn around to get that making me rushed as always to get there on time.
Mid morning, while cleaning up some equipment I managed to get a pretty good amount of bleach on my favorite dress pants not realizing the clorox wipes we use are ones that will ruin your clothes…awesome.
Once I got home I started to study for a while and decided I would finally make my much needed grocery store trip after run group tonight to find I had forgotten to get my wallet out of my CI’s locker so not only did I have none of my stuff but I wouldn’t be able to get groceries for another day.
I tried to hard all day too to not let the little things get me down, be grateful for life, blah, blah, blah but after enough little things add up it just starts to make you a little downright angry.
So I ran. Solution to all problems right. I went to the group, met a new girl that lives less than two blocks from me and had a great time (well until they all went for a drink and I couldn’t because I was penniless and ID-less). But for that hour of running I didn’t think much about the tribulations of the day, just about getting to know the girl next to me and running my little heart out!
Fingers crossed for a slightly more fortunate day tomorrow!
Today I woke up about two hours before my 7:15 alarm and then could only return to a slight sleep, convinced I wasn’t going to wake up to my alarm and was going to miss the group run, which really wouldn’t have even been a big deal.
I met up early with one a few of the guys from the group to get a few extra miles in before meeting up with the group for the 8.5 scheduled miles. About a mile into our pre-run-run it started to rain, then pretty hard and by the time we met the rest of the group I was soaked. Luckily it was significantly warmer today or it would have been super miserable. The first two and a half miles of the run I was kind of in between pace groups but with about 6 miles to go I caught up to a woman and ended up spending the following miles getting to know her. She was fantastic and had such amazing life experience like being part of the Peace Corp and living in Fiji! Did you know you can’t have your knees or shoulders exposed there as a woman. She was telling me she would have to wear a floor length skirt to RUN! Crazy, and way to go for her dedication.
All in all I ended up covering 14.2 miles (a bit more than the 13 planned miles). I had planned to go with the group for coffee and breakfast but I met another girl who lived near me that I was going to walk back with and she was leaving then. All the better though because the coffee place was further away from my house and I was absolutely soaked and starting to get pretty cold. By the time I made it home I was so glad I skipped it because I felt like I could barely move my hands. I don’t think I have ever had a better shower in my life.
After a productive morning, I was bound and determine to get some studying done. I had decided to take another board practice exam. These things are mentally brutal, 200 questions, no distractions, just your brain constantly whirring. By the last 10 questions I hardly knew how to read any more. I ended up with a 5% improvement since the last one so my studying this week has been helping, thank goodness!
Upon completion I was brain dead and turned on the football game to zone out. At half time I decided a cheese steak was in order after my brutal run this morning and brutal brain suicide this afternoon. My mind and body deserved a treat and what better when I am in the land of the cheese steak!
Working hard does have its benefits…yumm!!
I have so many things to say that I am about to just explode and this is probably going to be a messy disaster post but here goes.
Yesterday I had my WIAW post pictures all done but we didn’t get home from the grocery store until 11:30!!!! We hadn’t been in a month and really really needed everything and I am not even kidding, we walked in the store and the whole refrigerated (meats, dairy, produce) section was empty!! We didn’t figure this out until we had all of our non-refrigerated stuff in the cart so we checked out there and went to another store to get all of our cold stuff. What a debacle!
So here is my WIAW in a nut shell.
This morning I was able to go back to my Lululemon run group. I haven’t been able to go since April because it is Wednesday nights and that is when the neuro night for our clinic is which I have been going to every week. I was so excited to get to see everyone again and get a nice casual run in with everyone.
Bike ride to run, I live in such a beautiful place!
Group shot post run!
Then, when we got back to the store, they said they were gifting everyone that came a free pair of shorts!!!!! I was so excited. I of course got the Run Speed shorts and found this AWESOME pattern that I am now obsessed with. There is a matching sports bra that is polka dotted that I may have to go back and get!
My new beauties!!
Plus, today is one of my favorite holidays. I love that it is just a fun enjoyable day. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas but I love the fourth for the same reason I love thanksgiving. It is just a gathering of friends eating FOOD (best part really) with no expectations, or gifts or pressure.
I made my first dessert pizza today too. I am so happy with how it turned out, hopefully it tastes as good as it looks!
So now we are getting ready to head out for the day to the pool/beach and just relax (NO STUDYING) all day.
Hope you have a great fourth of July!
Scarlett ready for her first 4th of July!
So I have to apologize in advance for the especially crappy pictures this go around. It was an incredibly busy day and I was just frantically trying to get these in.
Breakfast: typical cereal and coffee
Midmorning Snack: Clementine
Lunch: We had a lunch meeting, pot luck today for the board of our student run free clinic. These things are always a challenge but I did the best I could to be pretty healthy and keep my portions small. I filled half my plate with veggies and fruit and then took small portions of the mac and cheese, bbq and a mini chocolate chip cookie.
Post Run Snack: Zico Dark Chocolate Coconut Water, my recent post workout/run go to!
Dinner: We have a weekly dinner with our friend’s Lindsey and Clay and this way Clay made what he called Chicken Bog (Chicken, rice, veggies and a few small slices of hot smoked sausage) and lima beans (also known as butter beans in the south). It was fantastic! Looks really weird in pictures though I know.
Dessert: After putting in a solid 8 miles today I decided I could reward myself with a little bit of ice cream Casey got. Love using a small bowl to make it look like I have a lot of ice cream even when it isn’t much!
At run group tonight, we also showed our support for Boston taking our picture and posting it to the Run for Boston facebook group that was collecting these pictures from all around the world!! What a remarkable turn out, it was awesome to peruse the site and see how many people participated today. Made me feel better about my faith in humanity!!
A few weeks ago I went to a running clinic and cadence was something that was talked about, ALOT!! Then today I read an article in runners world about “Chi Running” and this highly emphasized the importance of cadence while running as well.
This spurred me to do some research before reporting what I had read and heard. Ideal cadence ranges are reported between 170-180 steps per minute when counting both feet (85-90 if only counting one). The idea behind the importance of cadence is:
- You will have less steps if you are over-striding
- You will have more if you are under-striding
Both of these scenarios can be problematic as far as injuries go. So the cadence itself isn’t really what you are concerned with, it is what the cadence indicates which is what your stride length is like.
How to use this:
- For the first few runs, the Runner’s World article suggested using a metronome to count off your steps which I think is a great idea. However, the author continued to use this for a long time (which would drive me nuts eventually)
- After a few runs, return to whatever you were used to during running (musics, audiobook, etc) but every five minutes or so, block off 30 seconds to count your strides. So if you count your left foot only, you want to be between 40-45 steps.
- As you start to learn how it feels, maybe just start out your runs being conscious of the steps and counting them out for a minute and then continue along your run.
I have always been concerned with my stride because I’m so short, it was great to have a way to monitor what I am doing and what I should be doing rather than trying to measure out each stride (thats just nuts).
If you are in Charleston, come meet for the Lululemon run group on King Street at 6:00, I’ll be leading the five mile route and this is a three mile option as well! Happy running all!!
I realized today I hadn’t done very much baking an a while. I always take a bit of a hiatus after the marathon baking day I do with my mom at Christmas. I also had some bananas that were past my ability to eat, meaning perfect for banana bread. I love a healthy alternative to banana bread that can be a not so guilty pleasure!
1 cup whole wheat flour
½ cup white flour
¾ cup white sugar
4 medium bananas mashed
1/3 cup apple sauce
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp baking powder
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Mash bananas in large bowl.
- Add all other ingredients and stir until combined. It will be closer to a cake/brownie batter consistency rather than true bread dough.
- Add nuts or chocolate chips as desired.
- In loaf pan, add non-stick spray.
- Pour batter into pan.
- Bake for 55-60 minutes or until knife can be inserted and removed cleanly from the center.
Other than my return to baking I went to running group and lead the five miler and we went to the grocery store, so nothing super exciting. But we are all over the hump yet again!
Hope everyone is having a fabulous week!
Wednesdays are my busiest days of the week. I have class from 8-4, had a board meeting for our student run free clinic during lunch and then had running group tonight. Since I had to pack my lunch I made an awesome salad, it is the easiest thing for me to pack to take with me.
Spinach Salad with Pears, Blueberries, Pecans, Feta cheese and Raspberry Vinagrette Dressing
By the time run group came around I was so tired but I was excited to get to lead this week. When I got there, no one wanted to do the five mile run (only three mile takers tonight). As bummed as I was, this actually worked out better for me to only run the three with the race coming up and I am just going to lead next week (probably very slowly!).
I just wanted to do a quick product review before signing off for today. About 4 months ago I bought the Kor Delta Hydration Vessel.
I really liked it up until today. I dropped the bottle about 2 feet and the entire lid piece shattered. It was literally in 5 pieces, not salvageable. I understand that these kinds of things aren’t invincible but it should have been able to sustain a fall from that height. I would not recommend this product to someone who uses their water bottle daily and it carrying it around a lot (it is just bound to fall).
Since I was already at the Lululemon store tonight I was looking for one there. After the girl at the store pushed it off a shelf from five feet high and it just bounced around and was fine I was convinced, this was the one I needed.
So far I can’t really give an honest opinion about it, but after using it for a while I will keep everyone posted. I do have to say that water tastes so much better out of glass than plastic!
Half way through the week everyone, getting close to that weekend!
Everyone knows that feeling when you wake up, lay there for a while, think dang I really woke up way before my alarm this morning and then you look at the clock to see you’re 30 minutes late. I have no idea what I was thinking last night when I was setting my alarm but apparently I thought today was Thursday and that was when the alarm was set to go off. Of course my first class today was one where we get a grade penalty for being tardy and I am NEVER late. Not a good look on the second day of class, but I made it at 7:58. Yay!
Luckily, this was not a sign of the rest of the day. It was a gorgeous 70 degrees today which made going to run club awesome. I rocked my running skirt and a race tee-shirt and that was all I needed! Doesn’t get better than that on January 9th! Or does it…
It does. At the end of the run tonight before we went to dinner at Mellow Mushroom, the coordinator asked if I would like to lead next week’s run. I was soooo excited, I forgot that next week is the marathon and I am only supposed to run Monday and Friday but oh well, 5 extra miles won’t hurt me.
So now I am pouring over all my runs, looking for one that is my favorite to take everyone on. I know it really isn’t that big of a deal but I am stoked. Great way to end a day that started not so great.
Have any of you ever led a group run? Any advice?
Next time someone asks me how to lose weight, I’m going to tell them to go get a puppy. I probably walked 3 miles (this is not an exaggeration at all) that I wouldn’t have walked today taking her out and getting her energy out.
We took a ride in the car…
Her ears are already starting to stand up! Later we went to the park for like three hours and made all sorts of new friends. She loves being outside and just being out there she is so much calmer and better behaved.
She even let me finish my final paper for my research class and start studying for my imaging final which was way more than I had hoped for. So all in all we had a fun and productive day!
I had planned to make it to the running group tonight but it is my friend Lindsey’s birthday today so we are going to dinner at Pearlz (yummy seafood!!). Today was supposed to be a rest or swim day anyway and after my intervals yesterday my legs appreciated the rest. I missed the group but I know it will be better for my legs to just wait and go tomorrow.
Off today dinner…happy hump day!
