Monday Monday

This morning when my alarm went off I felt remarkably refreshed, like my body was completely ready to get up, at 6:50, not normal.  That was pretty much where the good fortune ended today.

I popped out of bed and grabbed Scarlett’s leash for our daily walk to find it was POURING.  Why I was surprised at this point I’m not sure.  One step outside found both of us scrambling back for the porch and sending Scar on a quick scurry into the back yard to do her business and hurry inside.  I figured without our 20 minute walk I could get to work early, and potentially leave a little early.  I scarfed a pumpkin spice bagel (yes, the pumpkin is now in full force in my life) and headed out the door to get my Monday-morning-get-myself-to-work Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks.

Once I got there the morning started weirdly due to a few co-workers starting late today and a few on vacation.  It is crazy how when you work with a team having pieces missing really throws off your whole mojo.  Really made me appreciate the amazing team I work with.  The rest of the day was a perpetual reminder of the fact that I work with people and that means no predictability.  Sometimes I swear all my patients team up and agree to be difficult and try to see if I will lose my mind.  No matter, I made it through and headed out the door to go home, whooped and ready to start over tomorrow.

Upon exit, it was still raining and downtown was majorly flooded.  I immediately checked the forecast and if the weather man knows what he is talking about the sun may actually make an appearance tomorrow.  My running is a cut back this week before my final week of surge allowing me to be more flexible with my rest day.  I moved my rest day to today in favor of maybe having dry shoes for once.

After a stressful day I turned to and my mat to attempt to relax my poor flailing mind.  I can’t say it solved all my problems but I did feel a bit better and more able to let my day go to move on to tomorrow.

We made it through Monday everyone!!

Productivity, well as long as there is reward

Today I woke up about two hours before my 7:15 alarm and then could only return to a slight sleep, convinced I wasn’t going to wake up to my alarm and was going to miss the group run, which really wouldn’t have even been a big deal.

I met up early with one a few of the guys from the group to get a few extra miles in before meeting up with the group for the 8.5 scheduled miles.  About a mile into our pre-run-run it started to rain, then pretty hard and by the time we met the rest of the group I was soaked.  Luckily it was significantly warmer today or it would have been super miserable.  The first two and a half miles of the run I was kind of in between pace groups but with about 6 miles to go I caught up to a woman and ended up spending the following miles getting to know her.  She was fantastic and had such amazing life experience like being part of the Peace Corp and living in Fiji!  Did you know you can’t have your knees or shoulders exposed there as a woman.  She was telling me she would have to wear a floor length skirt to RUN!  Crazy, and way to go for her dedication.

All in all I ended up covering 14.2 miles (a bit more than the 13 planned miles).  I had planned to go with the group for coffee and breakfast but I met another girl who lived near me that I was going to walk back with and she was leaving then.  All the better though because the coffee place was further away from my house and I was absolutely soaked and starting to get pretty cold.  By the time I made it home I was so glad I skipped it because I felt like I could barely move my hands.  I don’t think I have ever had a better shower in my life.

After a productive morning, I was bound and determine to get some studying done.  I had decided to take another board practice exam.  These things are mentally brutal, 200 questions, no distractions, just your brain constantly whirring.  By the last 10 questions I hardly knew how to read any more.  I ended up with a 5% improvement since the last one so my studying this week has been helping, thank goodness!

Upon completion I was brain dead and turned on the football game to zone out.  At half time I decided a cheese steak was in order after my brutal run this morning and brutal brain suicide this afternoon.  My mind and body deserved a treat and what better when I am in the land of the cheese steak!

Working hard does have its benefits…yumm!!

City of Brotherly Love (and ice, snow and freezing rain)

Yesterday afternoon I made it to Philadelphia after beginning the move by falling down the stairs loading my car and dumping my jewelry in the snowy driveway.  Definitely not the most shining start.

After unloading all of my stuff and finally finding a parking spot I started the insane task of getting all of my stuff put away and organized.  Two hours later I was pretty much there and I am pleased with the way my new home has turned out.

Once I was fully satisfied here, I headed to a bar (that I can literally see from my window) to meet my best friend Hannah to watch the Eagles game.  It was unreal watching it with all of these fans.  We sang the fight song, screamed, yelled and suffered together through a devastating loss.  I swear that the whole bar went silent when the game losing field goal was kicked.

Once the game was over everyone was in a fairly somber mood so I headed home to get some sleep before my last relaxing day.  I started with a run that quickly turned disastrous.  I had planned to go 6 miles but only made it 2.5 at an excruciatingly slow pace due to the ice covered sidewalks.  I hit the art museum and turned around saving my poor self from a broken leg.  People I passed literally looked at me like I had lost my mind.

Following that very disappointing run I was ready to head to Hannah’s for some fresh, homemade bagels!  Yep, her boyfriend made them from scratch and I can say honestly they may have been the best bagels I have ever tasted!

We had such a great afternoon catching up, grubbing on these beauties and watching the most recent episode of Parenthood.  Unfortunately I had to get to the grocery store and try to make it home to park my car on our street (which is a near impossible task in this city).   I am soooooo not cut out for city living, let me tell you!

After hunting for 30 minutes for a spot I finally gave up on getting one on our one free street that we have in front of the house and parked on a permit street resolving that I would have to get up earlier in the morning to park on our street once people had left for work.  I came in, put away groceries and settled in for the 49ers game, hoping at least Casey could end up happy with football this weekend.  Then with 30 seconds left in the game I heard a huge crunch of tires on snow…SOMEONE WAS LEAVING!  But the game was tied and it was going to come down to this field goal.  I crossed all my fingers and toes and watched the rest of the game (with a 49ers win) and ran down the street to get my car and bring it to my street.  I have never felt more victorious in my entire life.  I probably will never drive my car again either!

So far Philadelphia has been quite testy with me but I am trying to keep an open mind.  First day of rotation number 3 tomorrow, wish me luck!

Meeting Fitness Goals (before the Thanksgiving Shenanegans)

I don’t know about where you live, but it was pretty much as gross as it gets here today.  At three this afternoon, it was so dark outside the office it felt like the middle of the night.  I swear to you, this is no exaggeration.  With that being said, the motivation to go to the gym and bust my butt was pretty low.  However I knew that today was the day I was going to hit my yearly mile goal if I could just make it to the through the front doors.

Once I dragged myself in I had a really great run, even on the treadmill, and even without the tvs working.  I was so shocked.  After my run I got in a 30 minute Nike Training Club Workout.  It was an intermediate get toned work out called Curve Carver.  This was a pretty good all around workout that got me super sweaty and I really appreciate the time incorporated for warm up and cool down/stretch since I am bad at taking time to do this myself.

So with 34 days to go, I am thinking my goal for 2014 is going to have to be even more ambitious than this!!  Just getting better year by year!

Where is the Restart Button?

I should have known when I woke up 30 minutes after my alarm because my phone fell from the tree fort in the middle of the night and I didn’t hear it, that the rest of the day wasn’t going to be much better.  Luckily, I had changed my schedule this week to have an easy run this morning and go to hot yoga tonight so I could give my body a full day of rest on Wednesday.  The whole waking up late thing nixed the run but it was an okay day for that to happen because I was supposed to do it tomorrow any way.  No harm, no foul.

I assumed a casual getting ready routine and even cooked eggs (will be on tomorrows WIAW), packed lunch and headed to school.  Nothing crazy there other than it is officially getting hot, even just sitting outside to eat lunch in the dog park was almost unbearable.  After class was over at 3, I headed up to get some work done before heading to hot yoga.

When I went to get on my bike, I found this little guy…

2013-06-11 16.58.47He was just so stinkin’ cute, I have never seen a cricket so small.  I quickly named him Jiminie (obvriously) and gently set him on the ground before heading on my way.

Yoga was stinkin hard today.  Like stupid hard.  It was really hot, I’m sure because it is getting a lot hotter outside and I’m just not adjusted yet.  On top of that, during our last asana, I looked out the window to see that it was torrentially down pouring!  After class I called Casey to see if he could come get me since I was on my bike but he wasn’t back down town yet.  I hung out for about 10 minutes just waiting for the rain to simmer down a little bit.  However, a 10 minute downpour in Charleston leaves you with

2013-06-11 19.31.06which is not exactly what I would call “ideal” for bike riding.  I made it home without getting too wet and am now happily enjoying a new round of thunderstorms from the comfort of my couch.

I guess days like this are necessary to make the really good days feel awesome!  But to solve todays problems, I’m gonna sit down to a large glass of dark chocolate almond milk and a book.

Hope you guys had a slightly more fortunate Tuesday than I did!

Me 2, Andrea 0, Winning!

Last night was the third in the 5k Race the Landing Series.  It was also when Tropical Storm Andrea decided to grace us with her presence.  There was a good drizzle going at the start of the race and I already had excuses made in my head for not doing well.  I had told myself I was just going to run this one for fun, blah blah blah.  I told myself a million things that disintegrated the second the horn sounded.

The first mile I got dragged out pretty fast by the girl that I edged out in the last race.  I now realize she probably goes out too fast every time because I have had to pass her each week in mile 2 but in this one stupid me tried to keep up with her right from the get go.  Once I passed her and got a cushion I was able to slow a bit but by the time I got to the last mile I was hurting.  Oh yeah and the head wind picked up and the rain started coming down.  As if the last mile doesn’t suck enough right?

Around the next curve I turned to see how close she was behind me and I couldn’t see her, so then I really slowed down.  I ended up coming in at 20:31 which wasn’t bad, 6 seconds from my PR in the last race and given the conditions I was happy with that.  I also got third overall female again.  The girl that came in first ran an 18:40!! Holy moly!

Def not my best splits!

Me and Maribeth Post Race all wet

Me and Maribeth Post Race all wet

They had an awesome photo booth after the race that I will have to scan the pictures in on Monday when I am in school.  Dinner was German night so cabbage, pork, sauerkraut, spiced cake, scalloped potatoes.  It was the best meal yet!

This morning I had planned to hit the road for a 14 miler with my friend I ran with last week but we were playing it by ear because of the storm.  We ended up just deciding to tough it out and hit the road at like 9:30.  The first two miles I was a little concerned because it was raining pretty hard but after that it calmed down to a light mist though the wind when we got down to the beach was pretty strong.  Other than that though it was a pretty enjoyable run, it wasn’t hot, the rain kept us cool, it wasn’t humid.  It was really a runners dream other than my feet and sneakers being soaked from the inevitable puddle everywhere.  However, not 20 minutes after finishing, the sun came out and has been shining ever since, figures.

These are the days that make me feel strong though. Hitting the road when in the past I would have thought no way am I going out there.

Tomorrow will be an early day.  We are doing an adaptive water sports clinic for people with spinal cord injuries and we have to be at the site at 7:30 am and it is an hour from my house.  Yikes!!  I also really wanna get my three miles in before too, so thats probably gonna mean a 5:00 am wake up call, ON A SATURDAY!! ahh!  Sunday I’m going to have to sleep all day!  It should be really awesome though, I will have to make sure to take a lot of pictures throughout the day.

Hope you are able to have a nice relaxing weekend since I can’t!!

Just Making Lemonade Over Here

There is never really a day that I wake up and have to do half mile intervals and think, “Man I can’t wait to go do my run today.”  I had high hopes for my speed work today.  I spent an hour studying and what not then loaded my workout up on my Garmin and headed out.

Seconds after stepping foot outside the door I felt the spit of rain drops.  It wasn’t really much so I said, sure I will just keep going, its only four reps and I will be doing them right by the house if the cats and dogs start coming down.  Half way through my second rep I was still happy I kept at it, the workout would be done before I knew it and it had yet to really rain.  As soon as I finished that rep, the sky opened but at this point I was half way done and I certainly wasn’t quitting now.  Whats worse than plain Yasso 800’s, thats right, Yasso 800s in pouring rain and head winds.  The upside, it could be 100 degrees at this time of year so the cool rain was a nice relief from sixth circle of hell we are used to in Charleston in May.

My goal for the marathon in 3:30 so my goal for each 800 was 3 minutes and 30 seconds.  Rep 3 and 4 were a little faster than I wanted but I was just trying to get out of the rain.

Sorry for the poor quality, soaking wet post workout, feeling great though!

Overall successful speed work day, and retrospectively, the rain was amazing!!

Happy Monday!

Currently Building and Ark

So remember Friday, when I was in happy I-just-did-great-on-my-test-so-I-don’t-mind-running-in-the-cold-windy-rain.  Well that girl is gone and I would like some good weather please!  Will I get so lucky…thats a negative!

I Hate you Accuweather!

I hate you Accuweather!

We have literally had one day it hasn’t rained since Friday, and it was yesterday and I had a rest day.  I should have looked at the forecast and changed that rest day, but hind sight is 20/20 right?

So this girl begrudgingly drug herself into the gym and ran on the treadmill, surviving 6.33 miles thanks to Chandler, Monica, Rachel, Joey and Ross.

Bright shining light in my day though!  My running group I was with every Wednesday night that changed the day to Saturday is returning to Wednesday night starting next Wednesday.  I am so excited, I can hardly contain myself!

Hope you are having better running weather karma than this girl is!

Getting My Butt Kicked

Today was soooo disgusting here in Charleston.  It started raining yesterday and hasn’t really stopped.  I woke up late and lazed around knowing I wasn’t going running outside.  Before bed I thought I would go to yoga if I got up in time, but that didn’t happen.  It was so dark and gross outside and so warm and cozy in my bed.

After getting up, enjoying some coffee, getting some work done and just doing some general lazing around I finally got motivated to move a little bit as long as it didn’t involve leaving the house.  I had heard that vinyasa yoga gets your heart rate up and really gets you moving.  After the class I decided to do on youtube, I would say that is an understatement.

I was sweating bullets from the first five minutes until the end and I know my core is going to be feeling this, the title is no joke:  Connections to Core Power Yoga Class

It ended up being a great rainy day, independent work out but it got me so much more than I expected.

In running news, I add a page to my site about my goal to run a marathon in all 50 states!  I need everyone’s help for recommendations for states I haven’t done and don’t already have a race picked out for…help a girl out please!!

Maybe Mondays aren’t so bad…

When Mondays don’t include school, test or really doing anything they just aren’t so bad.  Scarlett and I went for a long walk and shopping, though we came back empty handed (maybe a good thing).  Then I did an awesome pinterest project that I can’t put up yet because it is for my best friend for Christmas.  I will put the pictures and the process up as soon as I give it to her though!

Then, since the weather changed to this…

I got to run on the treadmill…AGAIN!!  Luckily this one was only four miles, but darn I want to get off of that thing!  Then I came home and did the 10-6 circuit from PBfingers blog again.  If you want to add a new element of difficulty, include a puppy chasing your feet during lunges, batting your hair doing push ups and pouncing on you doing burpees.  At first it was funny and cute but by the end I wanted to punt her, I didn’t because I love her way too much but next time she is definitely going in the crate while I work out.  Her participation and encouragement was not appreciated.

Praying I can head back outside for mile repeats tomorrow but we will have to see…Hope everyone had a great weekend and that your Monday’s were at least half as good as mine.
