Finally Here

Yesterdays trip took so much longer than I expected.  After a full day of classes I rushed home to get Casey, drop off Scarlett at a friend’s house and rush over to the airport.  Luckily at Charleston airport you only have to get there like 30 minutes early to make a flight.  Scarlett was not happy with the situation, she kept trying to unpack her bag of stuff. I swear she is the most human like dog I have ever met!

Once we made it to the air port we only had to sit around for like 10 minutes before we were boarding, the TINIEST PLANE!!  The little ones make me so much more nervous for some irrational reason but the flight was smooth, thank goodness.

In my head I always think that when the flight gets in you are there but that is never really the case.  Once we got in and stepped of the plane we were hit by the most amazing chill, it was so refreshing after leaving 95 degrees in Charleston.  I was so glad I grabbed my cardigan as we were strolling out the door.  When we finally got off the very long tarmac, it took an hour just to get out of JFK and to where the rental cars were.

Then we headed straight into Friday night New York City traffic where Siri froze up and we made a bad turn right into Times Square.  I thought it was cool but Casey was less than thrilled.  It didn’t end up adding any extra time by some stroke of luck and I got to be in the city for a hot minute.

I was just happy to finally be there and make the best of the 5 hours of traveling.  When we finally got on the main highway to take us back, there was a huge fireworks show!!  Though I agree that it was a little dangerous and distracting to drivers as Casey was complaining (he was driving), I loved it.  That is so unusual!

We finally got in around 9:45, so right around 5 solid hours.  Not too bad though considering the crazy amounts of transportation devices we had to take.

Today will bring the expo (which I always love), some good nutritious food and loooots of water and gatorade!

Off the Plan

Today was a crazy busy day that shouldn’t have been.  I only had my seminar class this morning and went to see a patient for an hour and those were my only obligations.  However, I was gone all day and barely got anything productive done!

After doing a bunch of errands and finally getting ready to sit down to get some work done, Casey asked if I wanted to take Scarlett to the beach, which of course is wayyy more fun than doing case studies so of course I said yes.

I took my camera and took a ton of pictures.  Scarlett absolutely looooves the beach so you can tell she is super excited in all of them!

Guys, I know where we are going, HURRY UP!!

We didn’t end up getting home until it was dark and Casey was too hungry to run with me so for the first time in 17 weeks I missed a run.  It was only 4 miles and we walked on the beach for about an hour so I think I am good.  Especially this close to the race.

We also didn’t feel like cooking so we threw on some clothes and headed to a place called The Craftsman.  The food was really good and they have a ton of beers.  They offer 8 or 16 oz sizes which is awesome.  I really just wanted to taste one and the 8 oz size was perfect for me.

The food was fantastic and was fairly in expensive which is great (and rare in Charleston).    I also didn’t feel super unhealthy when we left, as I often do leaving restaurants.

Anyone have super awesome Labor Day weekend plans?

Swap It Out Sunday and An Awesome Weekend

For this week’s swap, it is less of a swap than an add.  They are a staple for us.

Of course my beloved Overnight Oats require these little guys but you can really just them for so much.  You can just add them to smoothies, yogurt and granola, cereal or really anything you can think of.  With about 25 calories in 1/2 a tablespoon, it is worth adding for all the amazing benefits.  They are high in fiber, great for digestion, there is preliminary research that it helps to lower cholesterol.  I am a huge advocate for these guys for sure!!

Saturday

Saturday I fit in a quick run, went to a class BBQ at one of my professor’s houses then headed up to the wedding shower.  I had set my alarm early to get my long run in but it was thunder storming so I just did some shifting around of runs and put something shorter in once the thunder and lightning stopped.

The BBQ was so fun and I took Scarlett who had the greatest time playing with her friend Leo and some new pups she hadn’t met before.  She was such a muddy disaster by the time we left!

As soon as I got home, I did a quick change and we hit the road to head to the shower. I am so excited to finally get to share our gift here.  I couldn’t before because I couldn’t risk the bride catching a glimpse of it!

I took the pictures around downtown Charleston and Casey built the frame out of some  of the reclaimed wood he has been stocking up!

We had such a great time just munching and chatting.  I didn’t do any drinking because I was the chauffer but everyone else enjoyed some nice beverages.

By the time we got home I was ready to crash…I think I was asleep before my head even grazed the pillow!

Sunday

We had a fairly lazy morning.  I got some studying done, read a little of my book, had a cup of coffee and then we headed to get some brunch at The Lot.  The food was fantastic and I did a good job making healthy choices (well I thought anyway)!  I got an omelet with squash, spinach and cheddar cheese topped with Kale with oranges on the side.  Sounds pretty good right…and it tasted amazing!

I thought that little coffee cup was the cutest!

I thought that little coffee cup was the cutest!

However, when I came home I left to run (about 2 hours after eating) and had hands down, no questions asked the worst run I have ever done in my life!  I threw up three times, at one point my vision was going blurry and I cut it short by about 5 miles.  I literally did not have a choice.  Even now about 4 hours after getting home my stomach still feels super acidic and I am shaky.  WOMP WOMP!!  The weather was amazing, I hadn’t had a sip of alcohol since my glass of wine after my 20 miler last weekend so I have no idea what happened, but it was no bueno!

I have decided to just make it up tomorrow.  I had moved Monday’s tempo run to yesterday, so I will just call todays run my “4 miles easy” and do my 12 miles LSD tomorrow, hopefully with a more fortunate result.

For now I am putting the run behind me, casually reviewing my notes and trying to relax because tomorrow is the big day.  9 am tomorrow I will be taking my 150 question comprehensive (over two and a half years) exam, no big deal right?  So if you think of it send me some love at about that time, I will GREATLY appreciate it!  One step closer to the end!

Work Out Change Up

Yesterday I blew it again with my swap it out sunday post so here it is…

snacks

This one is a no brainer for me.  For 120 calories you can have 8 potato chips or an entire bag of kettle corn.  DUH!!  Plus you get the salty and sweet vibes from the kettle corn so its a win win.  I must really really like kettle corn because I am pretty sure it is the second time I have used it as a substitute snack!

Today, I was the very image of domesticity.  I made bread for the very first time and it came out amazing.  I made them as dinner rolls so that I could make Croque Monsieurs.  I have never made them before but saw a recipe for them on pinterest and though I would enjoy the trip back to France where I had my very first.  Early in the day I went through the roll making process which was a long one…knead dough, let rise, cut dough, let rise, finally bake the dang rolls.  Thank god they were amazing or there is no way I would ever make them again.  They are going to be a new staple for sure, and the frozen rolls are now out of the question for thanksgiving.

After making the bread, I took a crack at making rice pudding.  It is Casey’s favorite, his grandma used to make it so I know I will never live up to that.  Plus mid way through making it, I spilled all of my evaporated milk when the can opener jammed so I had to totally wing it with regular milk.  I haven’t tried it but if it by some stroke of luck turns out well I will post the recipe (if I can remember what I did).

Once that was done and in the refrigerator, I took Scarlett out real quick before heading for my run.  However, the next door dog heard her and wanted to come over to play.  An hour later I was still watching them chasing each other around the back yard.  Next time I will have to get pictures, they are precious together.  By the time they left, Casey had come home and wanted to run with me.  So instead of doing my hill intervals, we ran the bridge, HARD.  I figured if I ran it at race pace it would still be getting 2.5 up hill miles in and pretty fast.  It was the only speed work session I have changed and because we ran it hard I think it was a fair substitute.

After getting home, dinner came together in less than 20 minutes.  Visit Lauren’s Latest for the recipe.  We also tried her Pad Thai a few nights ago which was also incredible!

Delicious!

Only one day left of lazing around and being an Italian grandma during my days…back to school Wednesday.  Womp Womp.  Last time going back to school ever though!!

Living in Luxury

Today started by dragging myself out of bed at 7:15 to go for my long run (only 12 miles this week).  The first hour was fine, the second was almost unbearable.  It was so incredibly hot.  By 8:30 it was 90 degrees and the air was so thick and humid.  Any time I was in the sun with no shade available I was certain I wasn’t going to make it.  I was able to finish it out but boy did I have to dig deep to make it happen this morning!

After showering, having some breakfast and enjoying a huge cup of coffee I headed back down town to hit the farmers market.  I got everything I needed (more fresh pasta, veggies and fruit) and then wandered around taking pictures.

Saw this in the sidewalk, love!

When I got home, I made a quick egg sandwich and a smoothie for the road and headed to the beach for the afternoon with Jenna and Lindsey.  It was the perfect beach day, there was a slight breeze to keep the temperature from being overwhelming.

We didn’t get off the beach until 5:30!  We didn’t get there until around 2 but I was shocked we stayed so late.  It was just such a nice, peaceful day.  When I finally made it home, Scarlett was playing with the puppy from next door and it just about melted my heart.

Pretty much in love!

Pretty much in love!

The rest of the night included reading my book and just hanging out.  Man do I love my break times!!  Tomorrow I will have to start studying for my comprehensive exam a little bit, just to do something productive.

Hopefully tomorrow’s run won’t be as painful (and sweaty) but we will see, hopes aren’t high!

How Do I Make It Through Life

Today as I was getting ready for my long run, I put on my sneaks, HR monitor, watch, arm band and iphone (man thats a ton of stuff), and loaded up my water bottle.  After my bottle was filled with icey cool relief, I was chatting with Casey a bit about the rest of the days plans once I got home.  While I was standing there talking to him, I was fidgeting with the bottle and found a comfort feature I have literally been unaware of for the past 4 years having this darn thing!

Tightening feature!!

My lovely water bottle!!

Top: the stupid way I have used this water bottle
Bottom: the infinitely better, more comfortable, awesome way I will wear it forever

I have very tiny hands so before learning this feature, I had been gripping this thing pretty hard for countless miles.  This way, my fingers can just rest around the bottle instead of giving myself tendonitis of the fingers!!  What a revalation, truly life changing.  More importantly, how could it possibly taken me this long to figure this out.  How do I make it through my days, seriously?

Due to my new discovery, well not due to but man did it help, I had a great run.  This week was a cut back week with only 13 miles for the long run before really getting into the thick of things with 19 miles next week and 20 the following!

Post run I recovered with a great smoothie (although it looks like elephant shit, poopey, doo doo).  I love having coconut water post run so I threw some of that in there with some spinach, banana and strawberries and small dash of peanut butter.

After a fantastic dinner Casey chefed up, we took Scar to the dog park for a little bit to get some energy out.  She is now thankfully passed out on the floor!!  Mission accomplished!

SO MUCH EXCITEMENT!

I have so many things to say that I am about to just explode and this is probably going to be a messy disaster post but here goes.

Yesterday I had my WIAW post pictures all done but we didn’t get home from the grocery store until 11:30!!!!  We hadn’t been in a month and really really needed everything and I am not even kidding, we walked in the store and the whole refrigerated (meats, dairy, produce) section was empty!!  We didn’t figure this out until we had all of our non-refrigerated stuff in the cart so we checked out there and went to another store to get all of our cold stuff.  What a debacle!

So here is my WIAW in a nut shell.

This morning I was able to go back to my Lululemon run group.  I haven’t been able to go since April because it is Wednesday nights and that is when the neuro night for our clinic is which I have been going to every week.  I was so excited to get to see everyone again and get a nice casual run in with everyone.

Then, when we got back to the store, they said they were gifting everyone that came a free pair of shorts!!!!!  I was so excited.  I of course got the Run Speed shorts and found this AWESOME pattern that I am now obsessed with.  There is a matching sports bra that is polka dotted that I may have to go back and get!

My new beauties!!

Plus, today is one of my favorite holidays.  I love that it is just a fun enjoyable day.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas but I love the fourth for the same reason I love thanksgiving.  It is just a gathering of friends eating FOOD (best part really) with no expectations, or gifts or pressure.

I made my first dessert pizza today too.  I am so happy with how it turned out, hopefully it tastes as good as it looks!

2013-07-04 10.58.02

So now we are getting ready to head out for the day to the pool/beach and just relax (NO STUDYING) all day.

Hope you have a great fourth of July!

Serenity NOW!

This day couldn’t have turned out any more coincidentally if I tried.

On my run with Scarlett this morning, everything was going great.  As we turned around and ran along the battery my stream of consciousness was flowing.  Look at the sunrise, ooh its hitting the water so nice, that tug boat is pretty cool, I wonder who drives tug boats, that must be serene, this run is kind of serene, serenity now, SERENITY NOW.  Then I perseverated on this episode of Seinfeld for a long time.  It was funny that this was so prominent in my head at the time because I actually was not in need of the phrase “Serenity now,” I was already serene.

Post run I had a normal routine, shower, breakfast, check e-mail before heading out for my bike ride to class (a few minutes ahead of schedule, which never happens).  I hopped on, peddled three revolutions and BOOM!

Big Old Flat!

Big Old Flat!

I hurried inside, got my bike pump, no go, too flat.  SERENITY NOW!!  So I ran back inside, grabbed my car keys and ran out the door.  I have no where to park my car at school which I forgot in my “solution” to the tire problem but luckily I just street parked and didn’t get a ticket.  Whew.

Post class, I had to drop Casey off at his dad’s which was really close to where I was doing my pediatric evaluation two hours later so I just packed up some stuff not come back in between. First stop was to get a new bike tire, then I treated myself to a half salad from Panera Bread for an early lunch.  I highly recommend the one I got, it was fantastic!!  And the major kicker was it only had 170 calories so it was the perfect snackish thing to hold me over until the eval was over.

Then I came home to brave the bike tire! SERENITY NOW!

No problems yet…

Putting that tire back on was nearly the death of me.  20 minutes later I was sweating like crazy, had the greasiest hands, but I felt accomplished.  It was one of those life affirming times where I felt like I can really do anything for myself, even if I am clueless about it!

Workin' hands!

Happy Tuesday everyone!

The Run from H***

My first class was cancelled today which meant I didn’t have class until 10 and didn’t have to get up until 8 which was amazing!!  What was not so amazing was the it was hotter at 8 am today than it was at 4 pm, who knew.

I decided to take Scarlett for this run and it was her longest run yet, 4 miles (up from her regular 3).  The fact that it was so hot and humid did not bode well for us.  She pulled me back the first two miles (as she always does on the way out) but then was able to pick up the pace toward the end, her last split was a 7:00 min/mile with the first split an 8:53 min/mile.  She is the master of negative splits, haha.

The run itself was insane though, we were not in sync.  There was so much more traffic at 8 than there is at 6 or 7.  Trucks were honking at us, which scared her and made her dart all over the place.  There was a huge thunderstorm last night so there were puddle everywhere, which she gladly jumped in every single one.  She kept really trying to herd me today, which she always does but was especially bad today.  I think because it was a different route than the same 3 mile loops she has gotten so used to.  Anyway, she tripped me like 4 times and one time I was so close to actually face-planting it was outrageous.

To top off her lovely behavior, she had pooped in the yard right before we left so I didn’t bring a bag with us like I normally do, but she dug her heels in and leg one go right in the middle of the battery with so many people watching.  I was horrified, there was nothing I could do and I certainly wasn’t picking it up with my hands.  I said a quick “I’m sorry” to the gods and prayed for rain soon (which we got this afternoon) and continued on our way.

I absolutely love my four-legged running partner, but shesh, sometime she is more trouble than she is worth!!

Love my girl!!

Atlanta, Here I Come

So this will be a short and sweet one.  This morning, I went for a run with Scarlett and then headed to school for a ‘typical’ day of class.  However, today was also the day I found out I will be doing my final clinical rotation at THE SHEPHERD CENTER in ATLANTA!!  If any of you have followed my blog at all, you know I am very into Neuro rehab and this place is the mecca!!  Shepherd is one of the nations top spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation centers.  This was my dream and it’s really happening.

shepherd.org/about

shepherd.org/about

The therapists work in teams there for either spinal cord, brain injury, etc but they work exclusively with one population.  I don’t know which I would choose (if I am even given a choice) but I guess I have plenty of time to figure it out.  This one will last 10 weeks (they are usually 8) from February 24th to May 2nd next year.  This does cut my third clinical short and I lose my week long break in between clinicals, but that is just fine with me!  This is seriously the opportunity of a lifetime.

To add to the joy of the day, we learned wheel chair skills and I was able to pop up a 4 inch curb which is incredibly harder than anyone you have ever seen in a wheel chair makes it look.  They are serious studs riding around negotiating the world in those things.

Me before realizing how hard wheel chairs are to learn!!

I can not for the life of me figure out how to copy a video from facebook and get it on here but there was a great one from today.  If anyone knows how I would love to be able to share it!!

Happy National Runners Day Eve!!
