James Island Connector Run and BC Team Fun

Since Friday has been super busy and so much fun!!

I woke up early to run finally because I knew after work was going to be busy.  It was still dark when I was done running which didn’t make me a happy camper but oh well, the time change should help that for a little bit.

At work we had a pot luck lunch because the other student had her last day before leaving for her next rotation.

To say I was stuffed after lunch would be the understatement of the year.  (And after the rest of the weekend, I am absolutely ready to put some good food in my body tomorrow).

After work we went to Holy City Brewery for a quick beer before I had to head downtown and get everyone’s packets for the race.

I finally made it home at 7:30 where we hung out until everyone made it here around 11.  We chatted and caught up for a little bit before heading to bed.

We woke up around 7, had some light fuel and coffee before heading over to the start of the race.  I ended up seeing so many people I knew at the race.  A lot that I had met at the Charlestowne Landing 5k series over the summer, people from school, just from all over the place!!

The girl that now lives in my old room is a first year PT student and runner and we ended up running the race together and having a great race.  The beginning was super crowded and we were way too far back to start so we had to do a lot of dodging in the beginning but we made up time well and were able to finish in 43:30.  We averaged 6:58 miles and her goal was to hit 7:30s so we blew that out of the water!!

Even better, Casey ran his first 5k!!  I was so excited we did it together!

I ended up getting 45th overall out of around 700 and first in my age group.  I’d call that a successful Saturday morning.  Marianne got second in our age group (20-24)!!

After the race we hung out for a while and had some beers before heading home and showering.  We went to lunch at the Craftsman and stayed for a while sampling their 8 oz. beers and just hanging out.

After a nice stroll around downtown we came back to the house and played Cards Against Humanity (which is basically an inappropriate version of apples to apples) until it was time to go to the Will Hoge concert.

The concert was awesome, we had such a fantastic time.  I was skeptical because I had never heard of the guy before and I am not a fan of going to a concert if I don’t know the songs to sing along.  The guy was great though and the company always makes a difference!!

This morning we all got up and decided to head to Folly for brunch at Lost Dog before everyone had to head home.  It was the perfect cap to an incredible weekend.

I was sad to see them go but was glad to get a serious nap in this afternoon!  It was so nice to be able to see my team again and we have made plans to go to a football game in a few weekends to hang out with them again.  It is much better when we have a plan in motion for the next event!

P.S. How is it Monday again?!

Happy Halloween

I was so excited all week to dress up for work today.  I couldn’t wait to do my Rosie the Riveter hair and impress everyone at work with my whole get up.  Unfortunately, my clinical instructor told me Wednesday that the corporate center said we weren’t allowed to dress up this year.  So sad! 😦

Other than that the day was good and pretty much as productive as you can be in a day.  Work 8-5.  Straight home to run around town with Casey.  I loved seeing all the little trick-or-treaters while we were out, it melted my heart!  Once we made it home we showered quickly and headed off to the store.  We did our big grocery shopping trip for a few weeks then headed home so I could do some cooking.

I have been fortunate enough to overlap with another student from University of Vermont for the first two weeks of my rotation.  This actually happened to me on my first rotation too and I really enjoyed it.  It was good to swap information, board studying tips and a nice transition into the clinical process.

Tomorrow is her last day at the clinic so we are having a big pot luck lunch for her.  I committed to making pulled pork (which had to go in the crock pot tonight to have a good long time to get awesome) and the pumpkin oatmeal white chocolate chip cookies.

Even more exciting, my team from the Bourbon Chase will be here tomorrow night for the James Island Connector race on Saturday.  Can’t wait to see them.

Off to bed now to get some good rest before another crazy busy day!  Love, love, LOVE Fridays!

Down Dog

Today I decided to get in a good yoga session before we hit the road to Charlotte.  On every run I have set out on for the last few weeks it has taken me about a half mile to get my hip flexors and hamstrings to stop aching.  I have been doing a lot of sitting around reading, putting my hip flexors and hamstrings in a shortened position (I sit pretty much in the fetal position).  Last night I took a gander at my workout log and it had been a MONTH since I have done any yoga.  WHOOPS!!  Really fell off the wagon there, no wonder my muscles felt like crap!

I have been collecting pictures of what Scarlett does every time I try to do yoga.

Just wants to get involved I guess.  I think she just really loves the yoga mat.  She comes running to it every time I roll it out!  Too bad her down dog puts mine to shame, haha!!

Now I am off to do last minute packing.  I will be without the computer while we are gone so I will write a full update on the Bourbon Chase on Sunday!  I will also try my best to document on Instagram.  You can follow me: ahellams!

I’ve got a secret

Here is a fun secret I haven’t told any of you yet.  I am running a 200 mile relay in Kentucky, THIS FRIDAY and SATURDAY.  AND, it goes to all the bourbon distilleries in Kentucky, hence the name Bourbon Chase.

About two weeks after the marathon, my friend Lauren who I run with quite a bit asked me if I wanted to do this 200 mile relay with some of her friends.  I JUMPED on this.  I have always wanted to do something like this but didn’t quite know enough crazy people to join me in the endeavor!  She had to make sure she would get the time off so I only found out officially like 2 weeks ago (maybe less than that) that we were actually doing it.  I am not sure exactly why I have kept it a secret since then.  I guess there were just so many other things going on in my life I had almost forgotten.

We are doing it with a bunch of people who do Crossfit (aka. BEASTS) that she knows, many of them living in Charlotte from what I understand.  The plan is to drive up to Charlotte on Thursday and then head to Kentucky Friday for our 2:30 start time.  I am runner 10, so there will be 52.3 miles run before I hit my first leg.  I am thinking I will probably do my first two or so in the dark.  It should be absolutely gorgeous there this time of year though.

Because we only have 10 people (because we are that awesome) me and two others are taking one extra leg for a total of 4.  So I will also run Runner 8’s second leg, an easy 3.5 miler which is NBD.

I am really excited; it will be a really cool race in a gorgeous place and I’ll get to make a bunch of new friends.  The only down side is that I am sure we won’t be sleeping much, will probably get back late Sunday and have my first day of my new clinical Monday.  But as my friend Maribeth would say, YOLO!!  It may be a rough, tiring week, and I may miss the Eagles-Cowboys game but I know I will never forget this experience for the rest of my life!!

So I say, BRING IT ON!!
