Crazy Week

Last Wednesday we had friends come in to town and the rest of the week was a whirlwind.  We didn’t really do any thing too exciting but spent a lot of time hanging out and going to the beach.  I was lucky enough to get a few good runs in the mean time.  But to catch up with random tidbits…

1.  We went to a restaurant called Leon’s on far upper King Street and I dove in to a fried chicken sandwich (after a 9 mile pace run of course) and it was fabulous and so worth it.  I especially appreciated the side of cucumber salad instead of fries, HUGE winner in my book.

2.  We took Scarlett to the beach with us one day and she had so much fun.  We haven’t taken her at all this summer, but I prefer to take her in the fall anyway when there are a lot less people around.

3.  Sunday was the first day of football!  My fantasy team got crushed, Eagles won, we all ate, drank and were very merry on this first day of a new season!

IMG_0140

4.  My run yesterday was incredibly eventful including this…

The hawk caught the squirrel and it was still moving while I was taking this picture

…then I fell.  And shattered my ipod. Got the skin of my hand stuck in the shattered screen.  Got glass stuck in my hand.  Had to put alcohol sanitizer on it all day.  Big fun!

My shoulder is actually the worst, I must have tucked and rolled but I couldn’t get a good shot of it.  If you have read for a while these pictures may look familiar because my cuts are all almost in the exact same places, right over top of the old scars.  Running is actually becoming hazardous to my health.

5.  I officially registered to go back to Boston today!!  Quite a few of our friends are going with us this time which will be awesome, I am so excited to share one of the best experiences of my life with more people I love!  Still haven’t registered for my race in November.  What is wrong with me?!

That pretty much sums up the high lights.  Hope your runs have gone better than that one!

Doesn’t Get Better Than This

We have had some friends come into town yesterday and more are on the way as we speak.  It is so fun having people in town, we love entertaining!!  I have been calling it early each night because of work but I am excited to be able to join in the festivities fully tomorrow night.

I started my morning with my first cup of coffee with pumpkin spice creamer of the season.

After a regular old day of work (although every day is still an adventure) I called Casey to see what him and his friends were doing to find out they were at the beach.  I rushed home, let Scar out and got my running/beach stuff together.  I always seize the opportunity to run outside of my normal routes, and on the beach was a double bonus!

It was a tough run to begin with, 45 minute tempo run, but adding the beach was a whole different element of hard.  I couldn’t find the right sand and for some reason the sand rubbed my feet really strangely, leaving me with many, many large blisters on the bottoms of my feet; not ideal.  Regardless the run was amazing, I peaked at the pace I was hoping for and felt great.  Plus ending with a refreshing jump in the ocean is the best way to go!

After leaving the beach, we headed to grab a quick bite to eat before coming home to watch the game.

That is THE FIRST NFL GAME OF THE SEASON!!  It really doesn’t get better than September: pumpkin spice, beach runs, football season and cooler weather.  Bring on Fall in full force please!!

First Beach Day!

I spent nearly the entire day at the beach today and it was glorious!

IMG_1453IMG_1454I read my book, hung out with my friend Cassie and her husband for a while and went for my first beach run of the season.  That was the only part that was crappy.  It felt so good to run in the sand again.  This time of year always makes me miss the beach patrol but getting to run on the beach makes me feel not so far from it.  However, they are dredging the beach on folly right now and there are huge rocks and lots of shells right at the shoreline making running challenging, and actually painful.  I ended up going 5 miles and have the cuts and blisters on the bottoms of my feet to show for it.  Proof of my true hard headed nature!

When I got home, Casey and I headed to a new restaurant down town called Chez Nous for our “three year anniversary” dinner.  We don’t really have a date, more like sometime around memorial day weekend, hence the quotes.  His parents had given me a gift card to this restaurant for graduation so we got to enjoy a fabulous meal and not feel so bad about it.  The food was exquisite.  Though it was a limited menu, everything we ordered was to die for.  It was kind of darn and quaint inside so I didn’t attempt to take pictures, though now I wish I had.  The service was awesome and the food was wonderful.  My other Charlestonians, I highly recommend it!

IMG_1456Hope you are having a great start to your Memorial Day Weekend!!  Off to a wedding for us tomorrow!

Bachlorette Day Two

Day two held all the really fun activities!!

We went to a place called J. Christophers.  I had this thing called a skillet with potatoes, onions, jack cheese, avocado, eggs and smoked turkey.  It was arguably the best breakfast I have ever had!

I highly recommend this place for brunch if you are ever in Savannah.  It was in an old auto garage and they had mismatched mugs which I loved.

After breakfast we headed home and got ready to hit the beach at Tybee Island.  We only stayed about two hours but it was really nice and relaxing.

When we came home, we all took turns showering and spent some time getting dolled up before heading out downtown.  All the restaurants were crazy packed so we ended up going to a burger joint, which is really Lindsey’s favorite anyway so all for the best!

After dinner, we headed to Club One.  It is a huge gay bar and there was an absolutely amazing drag show.  We had planned to start there and then head a few other places.  We stayed there from about 10:30 until 3 when the bar closed!  We had such an incredible time.

Sunday morning wake up came really quickly.  We had a quick bite at the same restaurant we ate at after the Savannah Marathon and then headed back to Charleston.  I am still catching up on sleep but what an incredible weekend.  I think (at least I hope) Lindsey had the time of her life!!

Hodge Podge

This post will pretty much be a jumble of a bunch of thoughts and things I want all included that don’t go together.

1.  My lulu pictures were released today and I totally love it.  The girl that wrote it referred to me as an elite runner which I certainly don’t put myself in that category by any means but what a confidence booster before a race!

almost famousAfter this picture got posted, a girl emailed the store and asked for my contact info because she is also running this race and hoping to qualify for Boston.  She texted me this afternoon and we are planning to meet up at the expo and maybe run the first few (or how every many work out) miles together, at least to help us not go out to fast and get a good start.

2.  I got the pumpkin oatmeal just how I like it today.  It isn’t super sweet so if that is how you like things you may have to use more honey or a bit of sugar.

DSC_0018

Ingredients:

3/4 cup almond milk (regular milk is fine too)

Pinch of Salt

Just less than 1/2 cup of Old Fashioned Oats

2 TBSP pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)

1 1/2 tsp honey

1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

1/2 tsp cinnamon

Directions:

1.  Bring milk and salt to slight boil.

2.  Stir in oats and cook until thick oats are left stirring occasionally.  Stay close because it can bubble over pretty easily if you aren’t paying attention.

3.  Reduce heat to low and add pumpkin, honey and pumpkin pie spice.  Stir thoroughly.

4.  Place in bowl and garnish with cinnamon!!  Delish!!

I was so happy with the taste.  It is a nice treat without being overly sweet first thing in the morning.

3.  I finally made it to the beach today with my friend Cassie while my oil got changed and finished my book.  It was really good and not predictable.  I tried to predict the whole time and about half way I just gave up and enjoyed the ride.  It is like all of his other books, it starts fast, has a few far fetched parts and he is getting shot at within 10 pages but it is such a wild, entertaining ride!

inferno

4.  I am all packed and ready to go.  I of course made many lists today to make sure I had everything I needed.  There are a few last minute things that can’t get packed until we are walking out the door but other than that everything is ready to go.  My mom just read the book I packed and said it was phenomenal so I will let everyone know.

5.  IT IS THE FIRST NIGHT OF FOOTBALL SEASON!!  And there was a delay to the start allowing me just enough time to finish composing this post.  Gotta love when the universe works with you!

Happy Thursday everyone.  Next time you hear from me I’ll be in PA!

Off the Plan

Today was a crazy busy day that shouldn’t have been.  I only had my seminar class this morning and went to see a patient for an hour and those were my only obligations.  However, I was gone all day and barely got anything productive done!

After doing a bunch of errands and finally getting ready to sit down to get some work done, Casey asked if I wanted to take Scarlett to the beach, which of course is wayyy more fun than doing case studies so of course I said yes.

I took my camera and took a ton of pictures.  Scarlett absolutely looooves the beach so you can tell she is super excited in all of them!

We didn’t end up getting home until it was dark and Casey was too hungry to run with me so for the first time in 17 weeks I missed a run.  It was only 4 miles and we walked on the beach for about an hour so I think I am good.  Especially this close to the race.

We also didn’t feel like cooking so we threw on some clothes and headed to a place called The Craftsman.  The food was really good and they have a ton of beers.  They offer 8 or 16 oz sizes which is awesome.  I really just wanted to taste one and the 8 oz size was perfect for me.

The food was fantastic and was fairly in expensive which is great (and rare in Charleston).    I also didn’t feel super unhealthy when we left, as I often do leaving restaurants.

Anyone have super awesome Labor Day weekend plans?

Living in Luxury

Today started by dragging myself out of bed at 7:15 to go for my long run (only 12 miles this week).  The first hour was fine, the second was almost unbearable.  It was so incredibly hot.  By 8:30 it was 90 degrees and the air was so thick and humid.  Any time I was in the sun with no shade available I was certain I wasn’t going to make it.  I was able to finish it out but boy did I have to dig deep to make it happen this morning!

After showering, having some breakfast and enjoying a huge cup of coffee I headed back down town to hit the farmers market.  I got everything I needed (more fresh pasta, veggies and fruit) and then wandered around taking pictures.

Saw this in the sidewalk, love!

When I got home, I made a quick egg sandwich and a smoothie for the road and headed to the beach for the afternoon with Jenna and Lindsey.  It was the perfect beach day, there was a slight breeze to keep the temperature from being overwhelming.

We didn’t get off the beach until 5:30!  We didn’t get there until around 2 but I was shocked we stayed so late.  It was just such a nice, peaceful day.  When I finally made it home, Scarlett was playing with the puppy from next door and it just about melted my heart.

Pretty much in love!

Pretty much in love!

The rest of the night included reading my book and just hanging out.  Man do I love my break times!!  Tomorrow I will have to start studying for my comprehensive exam a little bit, just to do something productive.

Hopefully tomorrow’s run won’t be as painful (and sweaty) but we will see, hopes aren’t high!

You know you’re a nerd when…

I officially am on break now!!  Wooo hoo.  Camp ended today so I have 11 glorious days to not have to go to school!!  I do have some school related activities to do (CARES clinic, a peds project, study for comps) but since I have already passed my comp exam which we have to take again when after we go back (I think on the 26th) I am much less stressed about cramming hard for it.

Today, immediately after finishing camp I rode my bike over to the library to find a new book or two for break.  I got a little ambitious…

DSC_0017

I had picked out three and then when I went to check out “And the Mountains Echoed” had come in that I put on hold like three months ago and have forgotten so out I walked with four books!!  Tomorrow I will hopefully be going to the beach with a few friends, after my long run and our weekly farmers market trip, and can do a lot of reading there!

The rest of the day I finished the book I had been reading and went for a very hot easy (pace wise) run.  I finished my run at the dog park and had Casey and Scarlett meet me there which was a great way to end and cool down!

Good luck on your long runs tomorrow/Sunday everyone!!

Trip Home in Pictures

So first off, I am sorry for being the worst blogger ever.  Those few days at home were an absolute whirlwind.

Many of my food endeavors will be captured in my WIAW this week so I will skip the redundancy there.

Post 20 mile run, we went to Surf Bagel for breakfast (my absolute favorite) and then I took Casey around downtown Rehoboth, went shopping, had a beer at a local bar/restaurant (Arena’s).  We headed home mid afternoon and went to pick crabs!

2013-07-18 20.07.33

I have missed this so much.  I love a good southern oyster roast, but nothing beats picking crabs.  This was Casey’s first crab picking adventure and of course my mom and I competed to teach him the ‘best technique’.  What ended up happening though was that my dad was the best and he learned by watching him rather than listening to either of us blabber on.  (Mine is clearly the best, it was just too sophisticated for a beginner!)  Just kidding!

First thing Friday, I took Casey to the cafe (Cafe Azafran) in downtown Lewes where I worked for part of high school.  I got my absolute favorite, baked oatmeal with steamed skim milk and Black Magic coffee.  It was so hot and I was sweating bullets the whole time but it was perfect.

The afternoon held a trip to the beach with my friend Megan where Casey and I realized we have become southern babies about the cold northern water, CHILLY!  After walking the beach and seeing all my old friends from the beach patrol (man I miss those days), we went home for a barbecue my mom put together so we could see all the family.  I swear she made enough food for 50 people, there were about 15!

After stuffing my face for a few hours, a few friends of ours that used to live in Charleston but now live in Maryland made the trip over and we met a friend of mine from college out in Rehoboth.  We started off at the token Rehoboth bar, the Purple Parrot.  I think the boys were a bit flustered but we had a great time.  Then we took the Jolly trolley over to Dewey and went to the Starboard for a few Orange Crushes (my summer favorite).  I was able to see so many people I knew, I honestly felt like a minor celebrity.

Saturday morning brought an early morning run, a hair cut and a last breakfast with my mom where my little brother has his first job!!  I can’t believe he is old enough!!!!  Then we hit the road to head north for the wedding.

The wedding was incredible.  The venue was awesome, it was an old theater.  We came into a receiving area, then went up to a room for the ceremony, then went to the balcony area for a cocktail hour where you could over look where the reception was going to be and then we headed down to the main theater area for dinner and dancing and surprise band LAURA LEA!!  This is a band we used to go see every Wednesday at the Starboard for as long as I can remember so getting to see them and being with all the people that mean the most to me made the trip 100% worth it; absolute cherry on top of a truly unbelievable trip.

Sunday morning was back to reality and the dreaded trip back.  It didn’t go very smoothly but I luckily felt pretty great considering the circumstances.

If you made it through this whole thing, my mind is blown!!  Today’s return to reality (and speed work) was not welcomed, hopefully tomorrow with set me back in a better routine!

What is your favorite part of going home?  Do you get to visit home often (if you do, I am sooooo jealous!)?

Just Making Lemonade Over Here

There is never really a day that I wake up and have to do half mile intervals and think, “Man I can’t wait to go do my run today.”  I had high hopes for my speed work today.  I spent an hour studying and what not then loaded my workout up on my Garmin and headed out.

Seconds after stepping foot outside the door I felt the spit of rain drops.  It wasn’t really much so I said, sure I will just keep going, its only four reps and I will be doing them right by the house if the cats and dogs start coming down.  Half way through my second rep I was still happy I kept at it, the workout would be done before I knew it and it had yet to really rain.  As soon as I finished that rep, the sky opened but at this point I was half way done and I certainly wasn’t quitting now.  Whats worse than plain Yasso 800’s, thats right, Yasso 800s in pouring rain and head winds.  The upside, it could be 100 degrees at this time of year so the cool rain was a nice relief from sixth circle of hell we are used to in Charleston in May.

Yasso's

Yasso’s

My goal for the marathon in 3:30 so my goal for each 800 was 3 minutes and 30 seconds.  Rep 3 and 4 were a little faster than I wanted but I was just trying to get out of the rain.

Sorry for the poor quality, soaking wet post workout, feeling great though!

Overall successful speed work day, and retrospectively, the rain was amazing!!
