What I Ate Wednesday!

Yay for being back to regular programing!!

Another lazy morning in my world right now.

Breakfast: Cereal and Coffee (I swear my breakfasts have been more exciting every other day)

Lunch: Sausage and Veggie Scramble; Casey and his dad made chicken sausages with peppers and onions for lunch Monday so I used the left overs and added some spinach and egg whites for this filling, nutritious lunch!  It was the perfect fuel before my short run (in some serious heat) and 45 minute Nike Training Club Work out this afternoon.


Dinner: Charcuterrie and Wine; It was my friend Nicole’s birthday, so we went out with her and her boyfriend for some wine and cheese at Bin 152.  I hadn’t eaten much all day and Steve and Casey were really hungry so they ordered a little bit of everything.  It was delicious!!

IMG_1472IMG_1474All in all, it was a pretty delicious day.  Hoping for a slightly less steamy one tomorrow!

To Feel Good Again

Saturday we traveled along what I am sure is the longest road in America (I-26, its the worst) to Spartanburg for my friend Steph and her new husband Patrick to be married.  There were quite a few people from my class there and we had a great time with the little mini reunion.  The wedding was beautiful as was Steph; just stunning.  The wedding was Kentucky Derby themed (him being from Kentucky) and we all got derby glasses from different years as our favors, so cool and unique!  We had such a fabulous time dancing the night away and Steph and Patrick closed out the night with a swing dance to Footloose (don’t worry, she had a different dress on)!

They rode off on a tandem bicycle with cans dragging of course.  It was so them.  Steph is a friend that I run with often, though not lately due to proximity.  I am sure now that we are both back in Charleston again, we will tackle many more roads together; her a new MRS!!

Sunday was pretty much a lost day.  After getting back, we were so worn out we pretty much just lazed around trying to recover.

Today was the re-kick off of my 6 week goals: 180 miles, 180 minutes of stretching and 1800 push ups.  It is also the kick off of Runner’s World Run Streak to run at least one mile every day until July 4th.  Game on!

Thank goodness I finally had my first run that I actually felt good on in weeks today.  I learned in the past week that just because you aren’t unable to peel yourself off the couch doesn’t mean you aren’t sick.  Recovering from illness might as well be recovering from a marathon.  Really, your body and immune system are working over time to get you better, just like it does in a race.  Fingers crossed I will continue to be in the clear tomorrow (I still have a lingering cough and sniffles, but I am on the up and up)!

First Beach Day!

I spent nearly the entire day at the beach today and it was glorious!

IMG_1453IMG_1454I read my book, hung out with my friend Cassie and her husband for a while and went for my first beach run of the season.  That was the only part that was crappy.  It felt so good to run in the sand again.  This time of year always makes me miss the beach patrol but getting to run on the beach makes me feel not so far from it.  However, they are dredging the beach on folly right now and there are huge rocks and lots of shells right at the shoreline making running challenging, and actually painful.  I ended up going 5 miles and have the cuts and blisters on the bottoms of my feet to show for it.  Proof of my true hard headed nature!

When I got home, Casey and I headed to a new restaurant down town called Chez Nous for our “three year anniversary” dinner.  We don’t really have a date, more like sometime around memorial day weekend, hence the quotes.  His parents had given me a gift card to this restaurant for graduation so we got to enjoy a fabulous meal and not feel so bad about it.  The food was exquisite.  Though it was a limited menu, everything we ordered was to die for.  It was kind of darn and quaint inside so I didn’t attempt to take pictures, though now I wish I had.  The service was awesome and the food was wonderful.  My other Charlestonians, I highly recommend it!

Finally Human

After being laid up for the past three days I was so relieved to wake up a real human again today.  I still have a little residual sneeze/cough and stuffy nose but I could actually function in society today.  Tuesday was the worst, I was maybe awake a total of 2 hours; I couldn’t even read because my eyes hurt so bad.  It was THE WORST!!

I finished Labor Day yesterday and am anxious to watch the movie.  It was a really good book, though a bit odd.  You just have to leave your judgements at the cover because this is quite a strange family and an equally bizarre story.  It was quite good though and I flew through it.  I have another book by her on my list called After Her.  Hoping to be equally pleased.


With days of doing nothing behind me, I was rip raring to work out today (and really just get outside).  However, I had squandered the beautiful spring days that were Monday-Wednesday and came back to life just in time for 95 degrees, no breeze and like 99% humidity.  YAY SUMMER!  I got in a little less than four miles (I figured I should still take it easy after being so ill) and I was sweating like a pig when I was done.  Before my run, I got in a little yoga flow too because I was getting impatient for it to (sort of) cool off.  It was actually a really challenging video (at least for me) and had me sweating a good bit.

I made the executive, in my thoughts smart, decision to restart my six week goals next week.  After missing two days this week, the last thing I need to do coming back from illness is over load the next few days trying to make up missed miles and push ups.  What is life without changing, and re-changing plans.

First Day of Real Freedom

Today was scary and satisfying all at the same time, at least it started that way.  It was so strange/horrifying to have a Monday without having to do anything and not because I was on break from school.

I had made a list of all the things I need to get done this week so make sure I can start working (and getting a pay check) asap!  I got up, made Casey and I breakfast and sent him on his way.  I read a chapter of my book lounging on the couch and started checking things off my list.  About two items down, I started to really feel terrible.  I had a terrible sore throat all day yesterday and it seemed to have unfortunately called its friends bad headache, achyness and congestion to come play.

I decided to try to mental muscle it out.  “I don’t feel sick, I’m fine, get out of the chair.”  It worked for a little bit and I was even able to ride my bike to run to the grocery store.  I figured if I could do that, I could get a run in, right?  I have always been told that if the sickness is above the neck you can still run, and have often found it will actually make me feel better.  Not the case this time.  Since my run, I barely dragged myself into the shower and under a blanket on the couch. Thank goodness Casey

In the words of my mother though, if I have to be sick, this is a good time for it.  Not exactly what I was hoping for on this first day of liberation but maybe tomorrow will be better

Workout Recap

Well, I did it!!  I’m a graduate and a Doctor of Physical Therapy!  But more on that later.

Casey was doing a favor for a friend and then we ended up having dinner afterward so we got back way later than I had expected.  I had been planning a big graduation recap but a) I don’t have the pictures from my mom yet and b) I’m sleepy!

I got a little behind on my 6 week goals this week as I knew I would with all the graduation craziness.  I will just have to make up for it in the next few weeks.

Weekly Recap:

Strength: 180 push ups

Lame fitness week, but with the major life events happening I will give myself a pass!  Graduation recap to come!

Challenging vs. Stupid

Monday, I announced my goals for the next six weeks.  Tuesday I COMPLETELY re-evaluated these goals and changed them.   Womp, Womp!

I decided to change the plan for a few reasons:

a) I’m injured.  No matter how much I deny it, I am not 100% right now and the treatment Monday wasn’t the magical fix I was hoping it would be.

b) I’m recovering.  Boston was 3 weeks ago, but from what I have been reading lately, full recovery from a marathon takes about a month.  I shouldn’t be jumping back to my highest mileage weeks 3 weeks after.

c) It’s hot.  I am adjusting to the heat and it is kicking my butt.  I am transitioning back to running in the morning which is always tough.  When I haven’t done it for a few months my body just doesn’t want to move in the morning.

d) I haven’t been enjoying running.  Today’s run was actually my first really good one in about a week.  The past few days I have just been dragging myself through the miles and haven’t been enjoying it at all.

e) This week is crazy.  My family is all coming in to town today for Graduation and Hooding Thursday and Friday so that has my days quite packed.

All this led me to adjustment of my goals.  I could have done the original goals but I wouldn’t have had fun doing it.  I would have suffered through but I want to take these weeks to enjoy running again so that is what I am going to do.

Newly revised goals for 6 weeks:

Miles: 180

Stretching: 180 minutes

Push Ups: 1800

Mini Goals

Last week on Facebook a Runner’s World article popped up that couldn’t have been more perfect for me to read. Click for Article

I am especially in need of a goal in my life right now. Nothing big or crazy but something! I met all of my huge life goals in a matter of 2 weeks and now I feel slightly lost. This six week commitment will be perfect.

The challenge is to pick a number of miles you want to run in 6 weeks (I picked the amount I did in my best month of running this year and averaged it to 6 weeks).  I landed on 250 miles (which may be a little ambitious but we will see).

Then you commit to doing this same amount of minutes of stretching in that time.  This comes at an incredibly appropriate time since I am still trying to shake this hip/groin this I have going on.  (Sidenote: we did some dry needling in our capstone seminar today and I think it may have really fixed the problem.  We will see tomorrow morning when I run!)

Lastly, you add a 0 and commit to that amount of pushups in that time.

The final product for my 6 week goal:

250 miles

250 minutes stretching/yoga

2500 push ups

Back For Good

Casey and I had a wonderful time on our trip to Florida. We visited Disney one day and spent the other days hanging out at the pool and playing cash bingo (no winnings for us though). We had such a great time relaxing and just spending some time together after being separated so long.

The Magic Kingdom was amazing as ever, though Casey was slightly disappointed by it. He had never been before so I think it was a bit over hyped for him. We were able to ride all of the big rides without lines any longer than 30-45 minutes which was great.

IMG_0122Tuesday night, after our awesome day of Disney, I found out that I PASSED MY BOARDS while we were at House of Blues in Downtown Disney. It was such an amazing relief. Only graduation left and the license will be mine (that sounded evil in my head haha).

Downtown Disney and the Disney Boardwalk were absolutely amazing. We had really great food and an excellent time just walking around, having a drink, enjoying the beautiful weather.  There were so many bands playing, the prices were actually normal which was shocking and we even ended up running in to my aunt and uncle down there by coincidence and hanging out with them two nights.

It was wonderful to get away but it is even more wonderful to be home, especially with my sweet puppy girl sitting on the couch next to me!

My workout week was less than stellar with a few miles on my feet whenever I could fit them in while we were gone:

I have a new goal to start for the next 6 weeks that I got from a Runner’s World article I read recently.  That begins tomorrow!

I swear that these bulleted list, life update posts will end when my life becomes normal again.  But here’s be meat and bones of what you’ve missed.

1.  My computer was dead for the past few days, hence the absence again!

3. I got a job!!  Its part time but its something to get started.  I got the offer call while I was in boards so Wednesday was a pretty awesome day!

4.  I am home.  It is so amazing to be back.  I came straight home and got new sneakers (after putting over 800 miles on my old ones (whoops).  I ended up with Brooks Pure Cadence.  I want to move to a more light weight shoe but unfortunately running far limits how light weight you can reasonably get so this was what we decided on.  When I got back, I took my sweet Scarlett for a run and it was like I was never gone.  So far so good, in the new shoes too!  (Though my hip pain was back with a vengeance last night)

IMG_13545.  As soon as we get moving, we are leaving for Florida!  This is what my room looks like but oh well, I’ll deal with it when we get back.  C’est la vie.
