What I Ate Wednesday

This morning was supposed to begin with a 4 mile easy run but that was promptly halted by the rain and cold.  With warmer temperatures and sunshine promised in the afternoon, I thought that would be a more enjoyable alternative.

After getting an extra glorious hour of sleep, I dragged my butt out of bed to get ready and have some breakfast.  Nothing new or exciting over here unfortunately…

with almond milk and coffee of course.

After sitting in much more traffic than yesterday I made it to work only about 5 minutes late (but still before everyone else).  The morning flew by as I feel it often does in my job and suddenly it was lunch time.  I had to run a few errands before tackling a fantastic salad and some other lunch regulars.

Spring mix salad with blueberries, strawberries, goat cheese and raspberry walnut dressing!

Once treatment sessions were finished in the afternoon and it was note writing time, I could no longer resist the Samoas that were starring me in the face, so I had two of those bad boys (totally worth it).

Once I fought traffic and made it home I figured it would be better to do my 8-mile tempo run today and save the 4 for tomorrow morning so that I wouldn’t have to get up as early.  I am learning that tempo runs here are probably best done based on effort rather than pace due to the hills but in my hard headed fashion I hit my pace markers I had set for each mile even though death was imminent.

After my run, I showered up, scarfed down some dinner and got set up to review my practice exam I took last night.

During my studying I had to reward myself with a small snack of raisins before having a dessert of greek yogurt with the Metropolitan Bakery Pomegranate Cinnamon granola I am obsessed with.  My portions keep getting smaller and smaller because I don’t want them to run out.

Hope you had a great Wednesday, half way through the week!  Only two more days until I get to finally head back to Charleston and see Casey and my puppy girl Scarlett!

First Days (Last First Days)

Yesterday was my last first day as a student!  How insane, I can’t believe how close I am to achieving something I have been working literally my whole life for.  What an intense feeling.  And with Boston happening at the same time, my mom and I were saying I am going to have a huge let down once it is all over!  Guess I will have to take up some new ridiculous challenge in my life (after taking some time to just relax for a bit).

One thing completely living up to its hype here is the insane traffic.  Getting to work isn’t too bad because we are heading in before most other people but we get out around the same time and it is taking me 40-45 minutes to get home.  I am going to try to stay near work and study there from now on so I don’t have to waste time in the car that I could be getting things done, we will see how that works tomorrow I guess.

This morning I had hill intervals.  After all the complaining I had about the hills Sunday, it was nice to just step out the front door and have one at my disposal (or 5 to change it up while I went).  It was definitely much more difficult here than on the pathetic hill I was running in Philly but it is good to be able to ramp up my training now that the race is only EIGHT WEEKS FROM YESTERDAY!!  Holy moly!!

Hope you had a great Tuesday (and Monday)!

Worst Blogger Ever Award

…goes to me!  I have been god awful this week.  I have been so busy finishing up my last rotation, celebrating the end with my coworkers and getting all packed up to leave.  We had a happy hour with all the therapist on my floor Wednesday, then dinner with a patient’s wife who I have grown very close to, drove home to Delaware for the night after working Friday then got breakfast with the family before heading to Atlanta.

I am here now, I can not believe it!  What a whirl wind, I can’t believe I was in Philadelphia two days ago.  I was able to get my long run in here in Atlanta this morning and it was tough.  I was so not prepared for the hills, and with a jump of 50 degrees I think I got quite dehydrated and am still recovering from a pretty decent headache.  No matter how many times I make the mistake of un-hydrating I seem to have to re-learn this lesson every year when it starts to get warm.

Tomorrow will be my first day at the Shepherd Center, then 10 weeks until I am done with school.  Pretty unbelievable!

Weekly Workout Summary:

Miles: 40.55 (somehow through the craziness)

Strength: none (pathetic!)

Yoga: 9 minutes Yoga for Runners (again, pathetic!)

Monday Tidbits

I feel that today I am more filled with random thoughts than any cohesive story so that is how it will be delivered to you!

1. I have grown to absolutely despise this…

IMG_0910

…and this…

treadmill

…and absolutely can’t wait for this…

IMG_0918

…I will probably just have to run around naked when I get there to celebrate!

2.  I am obsessed with Metropolitan Bakery granola that I got when I was with my family this weekend at Reading Terminal Market.

IMG_0916

I have already eaten that much of it since Saturday, so naturally I had to stop by tonight to get more.

IMG_0917

3.  Starbucks doubles my productivity, hands down, no questions asked.  And this yogurt I also got when I was at the bakery was life changing (as my friend Hannah promised it would be).

IMG_0915

I got a blueberry too when I was there but I have heard the chocolate is heavenly, which they didn’t have!

4.  I have the cutest friend in the whole wide world that makes me feel special every day, because who doesn’t like to get good old fashioned mail, and hand made no less!

IMG_0912

IMG_0913

I want just 1/100 of her creativity and talent for these things!

5.  I tried to move my car into one of three empty spots closer to my house to make moving out easier Friday, only to find they were empty for a reason (they are impossible to get into with the snow mounds) and ended up back in my original spot.

6.  We are expecting 2-3 inches of snow over night, likely my last snow fall of the year; 10% bitter, 90% sweet!

7.  I love the olympics and am off now to continue watching them, bring on the snowboard cross!

Happy Monday!

Climbing Rocks and Being Realistic

This morning I woke up a little earlier than expected and was anxious to get my run out of the way so I could get to a fun filled day with my best friend Hannah.

The run was quite a disaster.  The ENTIRE trail was covered in ice, I would have been better off on ice skates.  The run for today was 1:30 with a 3:1 with the last 1/4 at marathon pace.  I was able to average 8:13 in the last 1/4 because I just ran in the street at the very end, so about 20 seconds off goal pace.  Being 3 weeks into this training cycle and still not really being able to run the way I want to I am arriving at the reality that this race is not likely to be a PR.  It is disappointing but when I texted Casey about my frustration earlier today he brought me back up by saying, “Running the Boston marathon Al, who cares what your time is, not too many people can say that.”  Leave it to him to make me feel better in any situation.

After getting home and finally being able to get my car out I headed up to get breakfast with Hans.  We went to Green Eggs and it was so good!  We couldn’t decide if we wanted sweet or savory so we got one of each and shared!

I have a much, much, much greater respect for people that do this.  It is HARD!!  I love the mental challenge of it though combined with the physical.  We had a great time but my hands are killing me, should be fun putting alcohol sanitizer on them all day tomorrow.

Yoga: Shawn Johnson’s Stretch (15 minutes) not quite yoga but what I needed for my body for sure

Hope you had a great weekend!  Ready to kick off my final week in Philly.  Although I’ll be bummed to leave, I am ready to get to the promise of 70 degree weather in Atlanta!

My Family comes to Philly

After the past two days being stuck on the treadmill the past two days due to the ridiculous amount of snow we have gotten I was happy for my rest day to finally arrive; now I can only pray there will be less slick sidewalks for my final long run in Philadelphia tomorrow.

My family arrived around 11:00 and after getting them all parked we set off to Reading Terminal Market.  It almost felt like a replay of when my friends came a few weeks ago.

On the way we stopped at a Walgreens to get my brother some medicine and I got a few things for the homeless man outside.  It was a miserable, cold, sleety day and it just broke my heart to see him out there.  I was so overcome with joy seeing the smile on his face when I handed him these small items.

IMG_0884

Once we made it to the market, we got a few snacks to munch on while we strolled around, including the amazing donuts again.

I picked up a few veggies and some granola to help carry me through the rest of the week until having to leave.  I wanted to get so many things food wise but I wanted to be practical, the less I have left, the less I have to pack on Thursday.

After heading back to my house and stopping at a few shops along the way we picked up their car and headed back to Jim’s for some cheese steaks; boy am I going to miss those, however my pants certainly won’t.

IMG_0887

It has been so wonderful being able to see my family so frequently while I have been here.  Granted it has only been twice since Christmas, it is much more than it usually would be if I was in Charleston.  Before this Christmas I hadn’t seen my one brother since the Christmas before!  I will be able to see them one more time next Friday night before heading to Atlanta next Friday which will be a great last visit even if it is a bit rushed.

Tomorrow holds a quite busy day starting with my long run and then a full day hanging out with Hannah getting breakfast and going rock climbing with her boyfriend for the afternoon.  I’m sure there will be some great stories to come along with that adventure!

What I Ate Wednesday: Galentine’s Day

Firstly, I have to apologize for how terrible the quality of these pictures are.  The restaurant we went to had very romantic mood lighting for our Galentine’s Day Dinner which made for horrible pictures!

Breakfast was typical cereal and coffee but I am obsessed with these Dark Chocolate Cherrios.  Definitely being added to the rotation.  After my hill intervals this morning I took this down so fast but was surprisingly satisfied until lunch.

IMG_0868

Lunch consisted of the usual: greek yogurt and granola, carrots and hummus and a clementine.  Nothing new around here, plus I am in “get rid of all the food” mode to get ready to move next Friday so I don’t have anything new and creative to take with me.

IMG_0867

After work I headed to Starbucks to get in my 2 hours of studying for boards and enjoyed some coffee and a banana.

IMG_0869

The main event for today was Galentine’s Day though.  A whole bunch of us girls met up and had some wine and a bunch of shared food and it was amazing!  It was such an enjoyable night and was so fun to be around a bunch of fun loving ladies and share some fantastic food.

Now I am happy to be home in my bed because it is yet again snowing with the promise of 6-8 more inches.  I finally signed up for a free one week gym membership at the gym around my corner because I know tomorrow morning is going to be absolutely treacherous so off to the gym I will go…womp womp!  Stay safe everyone!

Weekend with Casey

After work Thursday I hurriedly completed my first round of Yasso 800’s before rushing around trying to entertain myself until I could go pick up Casey from the airport.  Longest few hours of my life.

Friday, we got up early and went to Honey’s for breakfast, my absolute hands down favorite in Philly.  Then we headed up to the mountain for the day.  Casey hadn’t been snowboarding in two years and we had never been together so the pressure was on.  I was pretty sure he would be impressed but I certainly didn’t want to let him down.  I was doing so well and got so much support from his friends that I went off a jump much too fast trying to show off and landed squarely on my back.  Whoops!  Luckily (for my ego at least) Casey had his own crash landing about 30 seconds later so we left the terrain park after that.  Probably the best decision we could have made for our own health.

sb with case

After a great day at the mountain we headed to Casey’s hometown to hang out for the weekend.  We had no plans and really just got to spend time with friends and each other.  The only thing I needed to do was my 14 mile long run Saturday.  I got it in, in the cold, cold beautiful morning.  All the wide open space and rolling hills blanketed in snow were welcomed after being in the city for so long now.  The only problem was the lingering disturbance in my back from my tumble the day before.  I toughed it out but it certainly didn’t feel as good as it could have.

run

Sunday was supposed to hold a 7 mile pace run but I reluctantly made the decision to let this one go.  In all honesty I used my back pain as an excuse because I didn’t want to spend any part of that day not with Casey.  As pathetic as it sounds, there it is, the honest truth and I don’t regret it.  That 7 miles is not going to make a slice of difference in my race and I got to spend that time with him which meant so much more.

Today unfortunately held the return to reality.  I put Case in the cab at 7:30, attempted to pull myself together and head to work.  The only bright spot in my day was getting out over 2 hours early which NEVER happens, we are always the last ones to leave.  I was able to get my 7 mile run Friday in today during the daylight and save myself about 30 minutes of sleep Friday morning, got laundry done, studied, cooked dinner, did some work.  It was great to actually have some time to catch up but boy do I wish I could hit rewind to 48 hours ago!

So now I begin the next count down, 11 more days in Philly, 18 days until I visit Charleston and all my friends and sweet, sweet puppy girl there!

What I Ate Wednesday: Super Snacky Day

For some reason I seemed to have insatiable hunger today and I think it had a lot more to do with the day being a little slow at work and less to do with actual genuine hunger…whoops!

I got up this morning to run and for the first time went right back inside and decided to do some studying instead after slipping and almost falling three times before hitting my corner.

Breakfast: Same old cereal and coffee

Still in love with these!

So luckily most of my snacks were on the healthyish side but there were a lot of them!!

Casey comes tomorrow!!  I can not even bear my excitement any more.  23 hours, 34 minutes and 35 seconds!!

Charleston in Philly Weekend

My two favorite girls from Charleston made the voyage north this past weekend to visit me and we had such an amazing time.  It went so fast, I got out of work at 5 Friday and they had to be at the airport at 8:30 Sunday morning!  We surely made the absolute most of our time though!

Our weekend in pictures…

Our reservation wasn’t until 9 so after dinner we were pretty wiped out and came back to my house to hang out and go to sleep.  We must have been really tired because we didn’t wake up Saturday until 10:30!!  After getting a later than expected start, we headed to Honey’s Sit N’ Eat that is on my corner for brunch and it was not a mistake!

After breakfast we went to Reading Terminal market and I got some veggies despite the pictures of so many sweets. It was so overwhelming. We all ended up getting donuts, they were only 90 cents and they were made fresh right in front of our eyes. Maybe the best 90 cents I have ever spent

After wandering quite literally all over the city we had worked up an appetite so we went to get some cheesesteaks at Jim's on 4th and South. They were amazing and the girls have already been texting me that they want cheese steaks in Charleston.

We took our cheese steaks home to eat them with intentions to regroup and plan out our night.  We were so tired from our jam packed day that we went to the corner store and got some healthy snacks and watched Practical Magic and just hung out.  We had such an amazing weekend and it meant the world to me that they came but it was horrible how fast the time went.

Luckily I can look forward to Casey coming on Thursday!  I can’t believe it is finally here, its been 6 whole weeks since I have seen him.  Thursday is going to be the longest day of my life, his flight doesn’t get in until 10 pm…talk about torture!!

Hope you had a good Monday.
