One More Final

Thats right y’all, I have one final left to take!!  Woooo hooo!  Inevitably, my school also schedules our hardest, most meaningful final last.  It’s fine with me though because I started studying for this Neuro exam long ago since I knew it would be my toughest one and I would be worn out by now.

Today was jam packed and I didn’t even realize it until I sat down to write this post.  I took my test at 10:00 (it went well by the way), went to work for my work study for an hour right after that, went home and had lunch, went to Starbucks to study for a few hours, came home and fit a quick run in (in the rain), went to hot yoga, just made dinner and am about to sit down and study for the rest of the night.

I am worn out, as I always am after giving it my all at hot yoga.  It literally takes everything out of me.  So I plan to do just a little more studying tonight before turning in early so I can get up early and get right back to studying first thing in the morning.

My problem now is trying to figure out how to study at this point?  I have gone through and made all my own notes, organized those notes, made pictures and charts, read through all of these and now I have run out of strategies.  My mom always tells me that probably means I’m done, but I never feel like I’m done.

Oh and I keep pretending I’m done Wednesday but I am taking my Certified Strength and Conditioning exam on Monday as well!!  Womp, womp.  Guys seriously, next time I get crazy ideas like this, STOP ME!!

I feel like breakfast has gotten a lot of attention on the Swap it out Sunday front but when sugar and carbs are greatly excepted main dishes, its hard to get it right.  I think breakfast was where I used to get into the most trouble.  Heck, I love cereal so much (because of all the sugar I’m sure) that I used to eat it for dessert or an afternoon snack!

Bagels are a major love as well, carbs and dough really own my soul!  When we make egg sandwiches though on the weekends, it kills me that just the bagel alone is 280 calories.  So recently, I have been getting myself a bag of english muffins so when Casey makes these for us I just have mine on that.  I get to save calories and still participate in our Saturday/Sunday morning breakfast ritual.

I get the light multigrain ones so this swap saves me:  170 calories, 3 g of fat and gain 5 g of fiber!  This has the potential to save me over 2.5 pounds in a year just by making this swap the one day a week.

There’s no way I’m giving up bagels cold turkey (especially whenever we go back up north) but any time I can make this switch at home I try to do it!

Finals Make For a Boring Blogger

The good news is that my exams on Thursday went VERY well.  I got the grade back for the practical already and am very confident about my wound care.

The bad news is there are still two left (one Monday and one Wednesday) so my future looks very similar to my recent past.

I can pretty much sum up all that you have missed in my two days of absence in one image…

We did manage to make it to the farmers market this morning and got one of everything I am pretty sure and I have been fitting runs in each day but at this point Starbucks should seriously consider offering me some type of investment package.  I have been drinking hot tea like it’s going out of style  (because its cheap and I don’t have to add milk or sugar to it).  My favorite so far has been the Passion Tea, closely followed by Awake.  I was never really a tea drinker until recently but I have found a love for it through my studying adventures this round of finals.  Hopefully I don’t begin to have negative association with it!

What I Ate Wednesday

Since Wednesday I run with the group (and usually a little bit before) I eat more these days than most.  I just had to throw out that disclaimer before I started adding the huge amounts of food I had today!

Breakfast: Typical Cereal and Coffee (Honey Bunches of Oats and Almond Milk, Brewed Coffee with Coffee mate Naturals Low Fat Vanilla Creamer)

Lunch: Egg White Omelet with Spinach, Tomatoes and a Garlic and Herb Laughing Cow Wedge; and a peach from the farmers market on the side

Immediately following, I craved something sweet so I had a Sugar Free Jello Pudding pack (no I’m not 5, yes I still think they are the best thing ever).

snacksI got a little more studying done before heading to run group and putting in 8.4 miles on the road today (we went on the bridge which we don’t usually do, so that was exciting).

Post run I fueled with: my new favorite snack Fage Greek Yogurt with Mix ins (they were super on sale at our grocery store last week so I stocked up, I even wish I got more now!)

For dinner, we were super lazy and went to Moe’s which is our favorite take out place.  I like that it doesn’t have to be super horrible for me.  Moe’s also has an online nutrition builder, so you can see what you are getting into.

I finished my night with two Brown Sugar Blueberry Cookies I made yesterday,  They are delighful and the fresh blueberries just burst in your mouth.  I got the recipe off of pinterest from the “How Sweet It Is Blog“.  They are like a cross between a cookie and a muffin and are pretty much amazing.  Mine didn’t look like hers, but still taste fantastic.

And even after eating all of this, according to my fitness pal I still have 160 calories left –> more reasons why I run!

The day has finally come for me to take my final Neuro rehab practical tomorrow at 11:30 and then go straight to my Wound Care Final at 1.  So any good ju ju you guys can send me mid day will be GREATLY appreciated.  For now, I will sign off and try to shove any last minute knowledge into the mush that my brain has most certainly become!

Addicted to Running

Over the past few weeks I have had a few people express what I am calling “concern” about my running habits.  People have said I am “addicted” to running and that it may be an “unhealthy” attachment.  That I am “obsessive” about getting on the road.

In each of these pictures, there is nothing but pure joy on my face.  The picture on the far right is during mile 24 of the last full marathon I ran and I was in excruciating pain, but I was happy to just be running.

I am a 23 year old student with 10,000 commitments (most of them self inflicted).  Unfortunately, as a student I am largely sedentary, though it could be worse if I wasn’t in physical therapy school.  By the time I am done a day of classes I need release.  I need to MOVE MY BODY!  I need to do something outside of staring at my computer screen which will inevitably consume the rest of my night.  I need fresh air, sun on my face and a little soreness in my muscles.  I need to let my mind go.

So if you ask me if I am addicted to running, I will tell you absolutely, 100% yes.  I am addicted to the joy if gives me and the stress relieve I am afforded through it.  But remember this,

So you can call me obsessed if you want, but I know that means my dedication is showing.  My dedication to myself, to my health, to my future kids and to the entirety of my life.

Charleston Runs for Boston

This morning was a day that I can say absolutely restored my faith in humanity.  A few days ago I saw a facebook post of a woman asking for people to gather Sunday morning to run in honor of Boston.  I quickly committed to attendance (despite the 8 am start) and reposted on my facebook page.  A few friends of mine said they were going and I thought we would have a small group of like 30 or so.  NOT THE CASE.

What I saw when I showed up this morning astounded me.  There were well over 400 people (the 400 race bibs that were donated ran out and there was a line for a while that didn’t get one).  People had their kids, I brought Scarlett and other people had their dogs.

The “race” was not even sort of competitive.  It was purely, simply people running together for the camaraderie, to share their stories and their journeys along the road.  What really astounded me was the finish.  EVERYONE stayed to cheer EVERYONE in.  There was clapping and cheering, couples with their past race Boston shirts on.  I was literally brought to tears by the overwhelming support everyone showed for one another.

Another Super Productive Saturday

Having the farmer’s market back in town as been great for my productivity.  I get up and am more motivated to get moving so I can get good produce!

This week I got a ton more great stuff including another watermelon (I ate the last one in like 4 days).  I also tried this great bar that I got a sample of as we walked by.  I meant to go back and get some but I completely forgot (there is always next week).  They are made of only dried fruit and nuts.  I couldn’t believe how great they tasted with no refined anything in them.

After getting dragged home from the market by Scarlett, I went for an 8 mile run over the Cooper River Bridge to Shem Creek and back.

For the rest of the afternoon, I did some cleaning around the house and did a ton of studying for my upcoming finals (two Thursday, one next Monday and one Wednesday ending in the grand finale of the CSCS exam the following Monday).  My brain hurts just thinking about it, one day at a time!

I made a huge stir fry with a lot of the vegetables we got at the market this morning and it was fantastic.  While that was cooking up I made my Whole Wheat Banana Bread because I had some bananas that were on their last leg.

After all of that I still wasn’t done, I was quite domestic today.  I finished my night with my favorite sweet (but not too bad for you) treat.

A Little Beauty in the Darkness

After once again being glued to the news all morning, my mind needed a break from the horrifying news.  I set out on a run logging charity miles for the Wounded Warrior Project and the fallen police officer Sean Collier.

After a week of so much sadness and pain, I ran past a front yard of colorful beauty.  It helped me remember the world isn’t a terrible place, just a place where terrible things happen.  We just need to stand strong in the face of adversity and prove that we can do all things if we stand together.

Healthy Eating Nightmare

As the school year starts to wind down we have final committee meetings, banquets, dinners, etc.  These are a nightmare for any person trying to eat healthily.  I have come up with a couple of strategies to help myself do the best I can at these functions.  Although I inevitably eat things I wouldn’t usually eat, it helps me keep a simple pot luck lunch from becoming a total indulgence fest!

1.  Survey the food before you make choices.  If you can see your options first, you can pick what most appeals to you and get really excited about that one thing rather than getting to that and already having a plate full of food.

2.  Limit yourself to one plate.  This is especially challenging for me because I hate for my food to touch.  If you can’t fit it on one plate, you probably don’t need it.

3.  Fill half of your plate with fruits and veggies.  This will give you a head start on keeping your plate manageable.  There is almost almost a fruit and veggie tray and these will keep higher calorie options to a smaller portion of the plate.

4.  Take one scoop portions.  When you get to foods you wouldn’t normally eat, take a small portion of them.  This way you get a good taste of these delicious treats but don’t over indulge.

5.  Choose one dessert.  This is the hardest one for me.  I looooooove all things sweet so this part of these functions are my absolute weakness.  I try to pick one dessert and then avoid that table again.  If I end up getting one more sweet, it won’t be the end of the world and I will at least have to think about it as long as it takes me to get back to the table (giving me time to change my mind, if I still want it, I must reallly realllllly want it).  

By the end of our lunch Wednesday, I was completely satiated and satisfied but I didn’t feel like I was going to explode like everyone was complaining of as we sat down to our next class.

Lunch: We had a lunch meeting, pot luck today for the board of our student run free clinic.  These things are always a challenge but I did the best I could to be pretty healthy and keep my portions small.  I filled half my plate with veggies and fruit and then took small portions of the mac and cheese, bbq and a mini chocolate chip cookie.

Dinner: We have a weekly dinner with our friend’s Lindsey and Clay and this way Clay made what he called Chicken Bog (Chicken, rice, veggies and a few small slices of hot smoked sausage) and lima beans (also known as butter beans in the south).  It was fantastic!  Looks really weird in pictures though I know.

Dessert:  After putting in a solid 8 miles today I decided I could reward myself with a little bit of ice cream Casey got.  Love using a small bowl to make it look like I have a lot of ice cream even when it isn’t much!

At run group tonight, we also showed our support for Boston taking our picture and posting it to the Run for Boston facebook group that was collecting these pictures from all around the world!!  What a remarkable turn out, it was awesome to peruse the site and see how many people participated today.  Made me feel better about my faith in humanity!!2013-04-17 18.48.43
