2012 Round up

My year in running looked like this…

I ran the Charleston Half Marathon, Nashville Rock N’ Roll Marathon, Savannah Rock N’ Roll Marathon.

Which brings me to 2013!

My biggest fitness goals will be:

1.  Run 1500 miles (have to beat out last year)

2.  Work on strengthening; I hate that this goal isn’t really quantifiable, but if i am going to continue running I really need to put more effort here or injuries are bound to follow

3.  Do yoga once a week

4.  Eat at least 5 servings of fruits/veggies and drink 8 cups of water a day

Non fitness related goals:

1.  Finish my last year of class room education

2.  Pass the comp (written comprehensive) exam

3.  Pass the OSCE (practical comprehensive exam)

4.  Slow down and smell the roses during this whirl wind of life!

Happy New Year to all!!

What are your goals for the year (fitness or non)?

Oh the Irony

I have been MIA for a few days.  Thursday I got my four miler in and then Scarlett and I hit the road for about 10 hours.  Then yesterday I decided to delay my long run until today so I could just unpack, hang out and relax with Casey.

Then I woke up this morning and started reading my book and pretty much decided I wasn’t going.  About an hour after that decision I changed my mind, threw my gear on and headed out before I could change my mind again.  I headed out with no direction and ended up quite a few places I have never been.  The view was beautiful and I enjoyed the run a lot.

Because I hadn’t planned out my run at all, I ended up back at home covering 17 miles.  I had had enough and had gone way further than the 0 miles I had planned on in the morning.  7 hours post run, I am so glad I stopped when I did.  My legs are in pain, like tons of ice, ibuprofen, achy, miserable pain.

I think my body is finally saying for real that it needs a break.  I am fairly certain that I have Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS).  Ironically, I did my final research paper on diagnosis and management of PFPS in physical therapy.

1.  Pain with ascending stairs

2.  Pain with descending stairs

3.  Pain with squatting/jumping

4.  Pain while running

5.  Pain after sitting for prolonged periods

Right now I am mostly having the pain up and down stairs and after getting up from sitting.  Luckily I don’t have it while I am running (knock on wood).  The bad part about this is that it doesn’t have a quick fix solution.  I need to work on strengthening my quadriceps, hip external rotators and hip abductors which will be a long process to do it right.  As of now, I will run this race take a little rest to relieve my sore muscles and then dive into strengthening my legs and hips.

So my post race work outs now have a direction, lets just hope the body can hold out three more weeks!

Birthdays and Packing

Today was my youngest brother’s 14th birthday.  What that means to me…I’M OLD!  We had a full day of eating so I had to make sure I got my run in even though the weather was horrible!

We went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast, which was delicious (but terrible for me I’m sure).  Then I had to visit the dentist to get a cleaning and filling.  I despise the dentist and have since I was about five.  One time my mom was so mad I didn’t get in the chair that she tried to scare me by leaving me there and driving around the block.  Because I am still going to the same dentist, I hear this story every time I go.  Nothing like small town charm.  Also, someone suggested to me to wear headphones during the filling so I didn’t have to hear the drill which made such a world of difference.  If you haven’t tried it, I’m telling you thats the way to go!

I came home and went straight for me run so I couldn’t think about it long enough to change my mind.  The run for today was 10 miles with 8 miles at marathon pace (8:12 hopefully).  It was COLD!  Like 30 degrees feels like 18 degrees cold.  The wind was like 30 mph.  Moral of this story: I did NOT want to go on this run.  But I put on every big of cold running gear I have and did it.  Other than the two miles that I had to go head first into the wind, it really wasn’t that bad.  My splits were even good…

Mile 5 was straight into the wind the whole mile, but still not bad.  I am so glad I went too because we went to dinner at a great BBQ place here called Bethany Blues and I got ribs and Mac and cheese and creamed corn and enjoyed every second of it.  We didn’t do dessert at the restaurant because we had gone and gotten Ben’s favorite cake…Cracker Barrel Coco-Cola Cake.  It was soooooo good, but so rich.  I had the tiniest piece and it felt so decadent.

Ben turned 14!!

Happy birthday to my little brother!  Unfortunately, I planned to stay just through his birthday so Scarlett and I will be hitting the road again after I get my run in.  I am excited to get home and see Casey and get back to a routine but it always sucks leaving home, especially when I know it is probably going to be a year before I am back again.

Happy almost Friday everyone!

Post Christmas Gloom

Every year on the day after Christmas my mom and I hunt the deals on Christmas stuff for next year.  We went out at about 9, went by Starbucks (I got a Skinny Carmel Brulee…soo good and my mom got a skinny peppermint mocha).  We went to a bunch of places and came up mostly empty handed.  I did manage to get two pairs of jeans and a skirt at gap for $55 so I did pretty well there.  I hate buying jeans, but its like bras, you gotta have them and you will get good use out of them.

Before heading home my mom and I stopped at Panera Bread for breakfast.  I was trying to be calorie conscious so I just got a bowl of French Onion Soup (280) and a Baguette (100).  Lunch out for 380 calories isn’t bad and I was full until we had dinner.

I had planned to do yesterday’s run today since yesterday was Christmas but it was absolutely disgusting out.  It poured rain all day and had wind gusts up to 45 mph…our basketball hoop even blew over. I also don’t have a gym to go to that doesn’t cost atleast $15 for a day pass which is crazy.  So I decided to just let yesterday’s run go, in honor of Christmas I guess.

I couldn’t just do nothing though, so I hit up my favorite fitness blog, PBfingers, for a circuit I could do in the warmth and dryness of my house.   I started with an overall cardio circuit.

Jump Rope Circuit

It was really good and a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, as her circuits always are.  But my abs felt neglected and I really wanted to get about an hour in.  I wanted to keep with the jump rope theme and she had the perfect continuation of the first work out…

Jump Rope Abs

I also was soooo excited to find a timer that I could set for one minute “work” intervals and thirty second “rest” intervals that repeated as many times as I needed.

I am glad I got some activity in today.  I hate missing runs but going out today was going to do more harm than good.

Tomorrow is my last day at home and it is my little brother’s birthday.  I also have to go to the dentist tomorrow which is not high on my list of places I like to visit, but necessary.

sharp objects

I also finished my most recent book, Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn.  It was really good, but freaky as all her books were.  I am glad I read one in print instead of listening to the audiobook, just to have a different experience with it.  Just like her other books, lots of twists, turns, mystery and just overall odd characters.  I would highly recommend it.  It was a very quick read, I think I got through it in 3 days, even with the busy-ness of the holidays.

Has anyone else read anything good lately?  Does anyone have a good source for circuit workouts for bad weather days?

Merry Christmas y’all!

No running or working out for me today, other than my jaw! Will be resuming tomorrow hopefully although we are supposed to get a ton of rain. I got a new running rain jacket from Nike (from my runners Christmas list) so I will get to try it out I guess. Always in search of the silver lining!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas! See you on the road again tomorrow!

The stockings are hung, by the chimney with care…

Christmas Eve night has arrived!

First to catch up on yesterday.  I actually got done everything on that dreaded list!  Breakfast with my grandpa (whom I call Grouch) was good.  I came home and went for my run and conditions couldn’t have been better (minus the lingering soreness from the field hockey!).  I donned my new under armor bra and cold gear top, the tights Casey got me for my birthday and my new Lululemon gloves and was more than comfortable (with no blasted wind!)

Luluelemon Frisky Brisk Run Gloves

Lululemon Frisky Brisk Run Gloves

I highly recommend these.  On the website they didn’t get the best review but I adore them.  I will never probably be running in 10 degree weather with a blizzard so I can’t comment on those conditions but they kept me toasty in a sunny 35.  The best part is that the silvery tips on the thumbs and pointer fingers ACTUALLY WORK on my iphone.  I had no expectation for these to work because it seemed too good to be true but they worked as good as my bare hand!

Anyway, as I was putting in my 15 miles yesterday, I remembered how great of a place I am from.  I saw canals, the beach, a forrest, downtown all in one short run.

It is just stunning and oh so small and quaint.  I just love it!

We took Scarlett to the beach for the first time!  She loooooved digging in the sand!  We hit my grandparents for dinner, I went to the bon fire for my friend and finally made it to the bar with my two best friends from high school/the beach patrol.

AND to top off yesterday, I won my fantasy league!!

Which brings me to today.  I went to my breakfast with my friend Hannah and Jess.  So now I can finally reveal my pinterest project!

She gets the SC one and I will take the PA one back with me.  I will put directions up soon when its not so wild and crazy and busy!

My mom and I wrapped presents galore, did some last minute errands, I got my run in for today and then we settled into our christmas traditions.

I always give my gifts to my family the night before so they don’t get overshadowed by the grander gifts from my parents so I gave my dad a pair of ear buds that I read in Runner’s World are good for running/working out.  I got each of my brothers a pair of dri fit nike shorts with their NFL teams on them (Eagles and Ravens) and I got my mom a Kindle Paperwhite since her birthday was earlier in the month as well.

Then we put on Elf and played the card game Phase 10.  We have done this every year for as long as I can remember!  The game lasted so long this year and Scarlett certainly didn’t make it easy to play on the floor!  Now I sit in bed and will hope to fall asleep soon since there will be a knock at my door that will probably come at like 6 am because my brothers are still young.

If you made it through this long winded post I am impressed.  I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas Eve and that you have a very peaceful, joyful, spectacular Christmas Day!

I’m curious though, what are your families Christmas/Holiday traditions?

A little Fockey

Every year since a girl I went to high school with passed away there has been a Field Hockey Tournament in her honor.  The tourney raises money for her scholarship fund and Easter Seals.  This was the first year I have been able to play since it started.

What I learned…I am TERRIBLE at field hockey now.  It didn’t help that it was inside which makes it super fast and that it has been like 7 years since I have picked up a stick.  All the rules are different and I was just so uncoordinated (exactly why I run now).  All that being said, we had a really great time.  My legs are bruised up because I couldn’t find my shin guards.

I didn’t do my long run today because we had 4 games and it was pretty exhausting.  I am in shape for running, but not hockey shape.  I am going to be SORE in my rear tomorrow from all the squatting.  The wind today was insane (like 30 mph) too so it will work out hopefully for tomorrow to be a better day to run anyway.

Tomorrow will be a packed day, start to finish…

Looks pretty much like a run from 8 am to 11 at night.  Thats what happens when you only come home once a year though.  Having a great time at home, I am just going to need to hibernate for like 2 days when I get back to Charleston to catch up on sleep.

We made it through the end of the world!

Well if you are reading this, I guess you too have made it through the end of the world!

Whenever I come home I have a list of places I want to eat that I have to get to while I am here.  It is a lengthy list which means looooots of eating.

I got up early to get the run in today which I have told everyone I am not good at doing but I had a hair appointment and I didn’t want to have to run and sweat after I got my hair done all pretty.  I had a good run but it was windy and rainy and cold so the odds were against me.  I have 15 tomorrow and we are supposed to have wind around 25 mph…womp womp!  Good luck on everyone’s long runs tomorrow/Sunday!

I hurried home and took a shower and headed to my appointment.  The salon was all decked out for Christmas.

There was even a man playing christmas songs on a keyboard with his very small dog dressed as santa…

I have been getting my hair cut by Chea since I was like 13 years old so I was in desperate need for a cut living so far away.  Every time I go in there I say “Take off as little as possible, I love my length” and every time hair goes flying and somehow my hair is never shorter when I leave.  I have no idea how she does it; she is pure magic!

2012-12-21 11.55.35

Today for lunch we hit Agave, a fantastic mexican place that I had never been to.  It is super small so there was always too much of a wait to get in for dinner.  It was sooo incredible.  I got a margarita and my mom and I split a steak and blue cheese quesedilla with chipotle mayo that was to die for!  I am glad we split it because there is no way I could have eaten the whole thing.

We went on a shopping excursion for the rest of the afternoon getting last minute christmas gifts and checking out the deals.  Our outlet had UA cold gear tops buy one get one free and sports bras 2 for 30 which I have been in desperate need of so I feel like I made out like a bandit there.  I was also able to pick up something for Casey (not at UA though).

What was so refreshing today was how kind and happy and genuinely helpful everyone was in every store and restaurant and business.  It really (finally) truely put me in the holiday spirit and made me happy to be where I am from.  At the end of the day, before we headed home, my mom told me there was something she wanted me to see…

Two young brothers from my community (in their 20’s) put up 20 wreaths and 6 crosses for the students and teachers that passed in Newtown, CT.  This here is what the Christmas season is about.  Not the gifts and the shopping and the food.  No, it is about truly caring about those around you and reaching out to people even if they may never know what you did.  I was inspired by this to do good as I hope everyone is this holiday season!

Home at Last!!

So after 9 and a half hours in the car yesterday, WE MADE IT!!

2012-12-19 15.28.33

She did sooooo great in the car…we only had to stop 3 times and she didn’t even pee at all in the car.  I was one happy mama.

Yesterday was luckily a rest day so when I got home I just hung out with the family for a few hours and then went and saw some of my wonderful friends from my beach patrol for a drink.

It is amazing how much I have done in the 26 hours since I got here.  It astounds me how early everyone here gets up to do things.  I am fully aware that I operated on this schedule not long ago but I am so out of it right now I am having a hard time adjusting.

Today I: went to see my little cousin’s christmas program, went to brunch with my grandma and mom, baked all of this (the stand up Kitchen Aid mixer is AMAZING)…

2012-12-20 19.28.32

…went for a 7 mile run, went to my little brothers swim meet and went to dinner with my family.  I am exhausted just recapping it all.  Every day I am home always feels like a sprint to the finish!

Today’s run was good but I can’t figure out how to slow myself down.  The run today was 7 miles with 5 miles at marathon pace.  Great, that is 8:12 miles.  Perfect, I can just settle right in to this thing.  WRONG.  My splits looked like this…

If anyone has a good strategy to keep yourself at pace, especially early in runs please help a girl out…I am fine to run 7:45 miles if I am doing a ten miler or maybe a half but I need to figure out how to control my own pace for the marathon without a pacer!  I have my GPS watch that constantly monitors my pace but I don’t want to just stare at the thing the whole time.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Sometimes running just hurts

Through my run today, I was inspired to write a few different posts, so I decided I will just hit them all.

Running in Charleston is dangerous.  Thats all there is to it.  Even if you forget the fact that people don’t drive so great here (I have been hit by cars three times since I have lived here), the environment is just downright hazardous.  My cross country coach in high school spent a lot of time trying to get me to run with my head up, looking ahead of me.  It took about a whole season but it is something that has been instilled in me ever since.  However, this became obsolete upon moving here; you look up you eat it.  In my first week here, my roommate at the time took a spill, I have personally taken a spill and my current roommate Beth has also taken a spill.   Next time I am running I will snap a quick pick of the lovely sidewalks.

Then about half way into my nine mile run with 4×1 mile repeats I started to hurt.  I had to go up like 5 stairs in my second mile rep and on the third step my I had a shooting pain in my right knee.  I shook it off and kept going but just didn’t feel quite right.  I decided to just get my miles in and forget about the next two mile reps.  I still was “hurting” but decided it was probably more in my head that I didn’t feel like running any more (I hadn’t really wanted to go today from the beginning for some reason) and not that I was actually hurting.  I’m glad I pushed myself through and I did make me distance but my knees and hips are actually aching 8 hours later.

Right as I was about a half mile from my house, the song “My Body” by Young The Giant came on my Ipod.  The lyrics are, I quote…

“My Body tells me no, but I won’t quit, cause I want more…”

Sometimes I really think that my ipod is some how connected to my brain and knows exactly what I need to hear.  CRAZY!!

The rest of the day, Scarlett and I hit the dog park; it was so beautiful out.

She is getting sooooo big!!

She is getting sooooo big!!

Then I had to do lots of laundry and pack so we can head home tomorrow!  Its gonna be a long drive, especially since I will have to make extra stops with her but it will be worth it.  I have a few new recorded books to listen to, christmas music of course and theres always Pandora.  It will be worth it once I get there I know but I just wish someone would just go ahead and invent a teleportation machine already, I mean come on.

1 week till Christmas!!  Official Countdown is on!
